Tellingly, when asked to explain support for Mr. Trump in their own words, voters of varying backgrounds used much the same language, calling him “ballsy” and saying they admired that he “tells it like it is” and relished how he “isn’t politically correct.”

Just had lunch with a 30 something who has never voted! He plans to register to vote for Trump and also plans to volunteer on his campaign. His reasons for wanting Trump mirror those in that statement.

In poll after poll of Republicans, Mr. Trump leads among women, despite having used terms like “fat pigs” and “disgusting animals” to denigrate some of them.

There's a reason why this sort of dig doesn't resonate with folks.

In the instances Trump uttered these phrases, the women he used them on were probably worse than he accused them of being.

The women on the Left act like they do, then when others respond to them, they are supposed to be gentlemen about it.

"Hey, I'm a lady!" Oui...

Wait, didn't you tell us not to use gender preferences any longer? How can a guy treat you like a lady. You wanted to be treated like the men.

Go into a men's locker room, and tell me what he said to you is the worst thing possible.

The term ‘New York Times’ is offensive. It triggers painful memories in me - and other traditional Americans.

Please find a new term... posters need to be sensitive to the feelings of others...

I think it is also.a sense that Trump will not waste a single moment in his Presidency. He’s an old man, who will only have one shot to do something right for the country. I’m starting to think that is his mindset and he may not simply be running to ensure a Jeb nomination and a Clinton Presidrncy.

he has effectively insulated himself from the consequences of startling statements that might instantly doom rival candidates.

More than that.

It's precisely the "startling statements" (to the NYT; truth to everyone else) that cause people to support him.

The politically (in) correct element is probably the BIGGEST draw

FR almost seems like we've been discovered, agreed with ... and now even WE don't need ourselves anymore !

After reading many of the comments I was surprised how many of the same people said that they would either vote for Trump or Sanders. They sounded as if there was no difference.

I guess readers of the NY Times are a little different.

I’m hearing more people talk good about Trump than I’ve ever heard talk bad about Obama and that’s been a lot.

In other words, he’s a cult of Personality, but unlike Obama’s cult of personality, he tends toward the right of the political spectrum....

Hillary nor the Socialist can compete with a cult of personality, because neither one of them have one.... The same can be said for the rest of the republican field. As much as I like Cruz ideologically he doesn’t have the personality to beat back a cult of personality that is the current Trump campaign any more than McCain could beat back the cult of personality that was Obama.

I can’t say where this will all end up, but I can say this, if the RNC things I am going to ever cast my vote for Jeb, Rubio or Carly they are certifiably insane.

Low info voters voting based on personal qualities instead of policies got us Obama. Policies are the only things that matter. Having someone with an appealing personality in the White House does nothing to solve our country’s fiscal, ethical or security problems.
