In the command centers of Republican presidential campaigns, aides have drawn comfort from the belief that Donald J. Trump’s dominance in the polls is a political summer fling, like Herman Cain in 2011 — an unsustainable boomlet dependent on megawatt celebrity, narrow appeal and unreliable surveys of Americans with a spotty record of actually voting in primaries.
A growing body of evidence suggests that may be wishful thinking.
A review of public polling, extensive interviews with a host of his supporters in two states and a new private survey that tracks voting records all point to the conclusion that Mr. Trump has built a broad, demographically and ideologically diverse coalition, constructed around personality, not substance, that bridges demographic and political divides. In doing so, he has effectively insulated himself from the consequences of startling statements that might instantly doom rival candidates.
In poll after poll of Republicans, Mr. Trump leads among women, despite having used terms like “fat pigs” and “disgusting animals” to denigrate some of them. He leads among evangelical Christians, despite saying he had never had a reason to ask God for forgiveness. He leads among moderates and college-educated voters, despite a populist and anti-immigrant message thought to resonate most with conservatives and less-affluent voters. He leads among the most frequent, likely voters, even though his appeal is greatest among those with little history of voting.

Just had lunch with a 30 something who has never voted! He plans to register to vote for Trump and also plans to volunteer on his campaign. His reasons for wanting Trump mirror those in that statement.
That’s because conservatives are constructing their own personality cult around Trump. His campaign is just as lacking in substance as that of Barack Obama. How can so many conservatives support a lifelong liberal who has repeatedly used the power of government condemnation to steal people’s private property.
LARGELY because he’s willing to openly say that American grannies are getting raped, sodomized, and murdered by foreigners and the other candidates would prefer to be sodomized themselves before daring to mention it.
Pretty strong assertion that Trump has built his popularity with a lack of substance.
The "journalist" needs to take a closer, and less biased look at the real substance in Trump's platform.

Easy for me! I’ll be 75 next week and we’ve been on a downward trajectory ( with the exception of the Reagan Years both here in CA and in Washington) since about the time I graduated from high school in 1958! And all of it is due to politicians who care more for their big donor’s money and the “prestige” they have being in office. Trump may end up not being the answer, but at least we have a fighting chance that he really means what he’s saying, unlike ALL of the rest of them, Cruz included. I don’t know about the rest of you, but when a politician says “he’s going to fight for me,” my sphincter tightens because I know it’s a bald-faced lie! The other word that causes me concern is “comprehensive.!”

Cruz has fought for us and as a result is not liked in the Senate. So, why should we trust Trump who has been buddy buddy with the Clintons and all of the Establishment and not trust Cruz who has virtually always been our champion?
There's a reason why this sort of dig doesn't resonate with folks.
In the instances Trump uttered these phrases, the women he used them on were probably worse than he accused them of being.
The women on the Left act like they do, then when others respond to them, they are supposed to be gentlemen about it.

I assume Cruz is smarter than you or me and he doesn’t have a problem with Trump.
It also doesn’t resonate with Americans because the real world isn’t the world the media projects. No one in the country is so PC that they would actually think calling a woman a name means you dislike women. You only find that lunacy at Burkley or Good Morning America. It’s not how we live.

I think it is also.a sense that Trump will not waste a single moment in his Presidency. He’s an old man, who will only have one shot to do something right for the country. I’m starting to think that is his mindset and he may not simply be running to ensure a Jeb nomination and a Clinton Presidrncy.
