Oregon soldier takes down gunman on French train

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A National Guard soldier from Roseburg was among two American service members who took down a gunman who opened fire on a French train Friday.

Alek Skarlatos of Roseburg was riding the train during a European vacation when a young man armed with a Kalashnikov rifle and a box cutter opened fire.

Skarlatos and his traveling companion –Spencer Stone, who is in the Air Force – heard the gunshots from an adjacent car, according to his father Emanuel Skarlatos.

“Of course they knew exactly what it was, being in the military,” Emanuel said.

Have to give accolades to CNN for their coverage this morning.

They are allowing praise of the Marines and even calling them heroes. Reporters have also actually used the word ‘Islamist’ to describe the perpetrator.

More than half of the morning on CNN has been dedicated to this story and these heroes.

I saw an interview with Skarlatos on Sky News. It looks like Spencer Stone is the guy who got to the gunman first grabbing him by the neck. He was shot and almost lost a thumb. Sklaratos gives the lion's share of the credit to Stone.

Spencer Stone, of the U.S. Air Force, was traveling with Oregon National Guard member Alek Skarlatos, 22, (right) who was on leave after a tour of Afghanistan, when he heard the gunman load his weapon in the toilet. Skarlatos shouted ‘Spencer, go!’ and they charged him down.

The press in europe apparently got this all screwed up and mixed two different stories together. So far that is all I can figure from all the conflicting stories.

Perp had a box-cutter type device. Stone apparently got cut several times. One cut to his hand was severe — he almost lost his thumb. Luckily, a nearby medical facility has a ward that deals with hand injuries.

There is an interview with the three involved (minus Spencer, who had been taken to the hospital) over at Daily Mail. They said spencer was sliced on the back of the neck with the box cutter and almost had his thumb cut off, but after they got the gunman subdued, he went immediately to the passenger who had been shot and took off his shirt to put pressure on the wound. That appears to be what is going on in the video here.

Apparently there were no French around to help? Just amazing. Kudos to these guys

In most ‘breaking news’ stories, about 90% of the initial information is subject to change.

Then, of course, comes the filtering.

In many localized events, the pattern is similar to this:

** Local reporters talk to first responders and witnesses and people in the area when the event happened.

** Soon, the on-site reporters are seen less and less and first responder comments are replaced by official departmental media liaisons. The studio news-readers open reports by referencing information ‘from Washington’ or ‘from the FBI’.

** Not too long after that, the on-air readers are using phrases like ‘the White House reports ...’
