Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders made dueling appearances just hours apart Saturday at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. But if an informal straw poll conducted by the Iowa Secretary of State is any reliable measure of whose visit was more successful, the Vermont senator clearly won the day.
According to the Iowa secretary of states website, which monitors the votes in real-time, more than 52 percent of Democrats who have cast a vote in the straw poll say they support Sanders. Just over 41 percent said they support Clinton.
Thats a nice gain for Sanders, who was tied with Clinton at 46 percent after Friday the second day of the fair.
While the straw poll has a small sample size and likely says little about how Iowans will vote in Februarys all-important caucus, it does provide an apples-to-apples comparison of how voters view the two candidates when they appear at the same venue.
Like nearly all of the other presidential candidates who have attended or plan to attend the Iowa State Fair before it ends next week, Sanders held sway Saturday at The Des Moines Register Presidential Soapbox, a large forum held on the fair grounds.
The 73-year-old Sanders drew the largest crowd so far at the event, according to reporters on the ground in Des Moines.
Clinton opted out of the event, making her the only Democrat and the only candidate of either party besides Donald Trump to do so. Instead, she chose to answer questions from reporters on the outskirts of the fair grounds. She also mingled with state fair attendees as she walked with Iowa U.S. Sen. Tom

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be on your own, with no direction home
A complete unknown, like a rolling stone
Ah you never turned around to see the frowns
On the jugglers and the clowns when they all did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain’t no good
You shouldn’t let other people get your kicks for you
Can someone explain to me the appeal of Bernie Sanders?
People will sell you their Souls if it gets them something for free.
GREAT post, lyrics speaking of “a rolling stone”.

Hooray for the socialist...less hoorays for the marxist
The appeal of Sanders is that he is not Hillary.
Hillary just isn’t likeable.or appealing to many Democrats. Her support may well be based on the whole inevitability coronation thing. Given an actual choice, lots of Democrats will vote no for a Clinton restoration.
Even democrats are sick of Hillary.
He is offering "free stuff".
And liberals love the prospect of getting "free stuff".
Hellary is the crack addicts Bernie Sanders..
A great rendition of one of my favorite Stones tunes.
I saw Bernie Sanders appearance on C-Span. He looks much older than 73 and sounds tired and pathetic.
I can’t imagine him attracting voters but maybe against Hillary ????
“I saw Bernie Sanders appearance on C-Span. He looks much older than 73 and sounds tired and pathetic.”
Sanders reminds me of Christopher Lloyd’s character, the crazy scientist, in the movie, “Back to the Future”. Only not as animated.
Sanders’ Appeal
The main reason probably is that he is a self-proclaimed socialist. Honestly. So for people who are super, super far left, and who sing the Internationale in the shower, Bernie is their guy.
A second reason is for all of Sanders’ faults, at least he does not poll test every answer he gives like the Clintons.
A third reason is even some Democrats are getting uncomfortable over the Hillary email scandal. Most lefties are still okay with it, and they rationalize it away, but already Hillary is taking on water over this, even in her own party.
Well-stated and LOL!
Tell me that little troll is not still around?
Run, Dennis, Run!
