Meet the science teacher who lost 60 pounds eating nothing but McDonald's three meals a day

Iowa high school science teacher John Cisna weighed 280 pounds and wore a size 51 pants.

Then he started eating at McDonalds.

Every meal. Every day. For 180 days.

By the end of his experiment, Cisna was down to a relatively svelte 220 and could slip into a size 36.

Cisna, who is Birmingham today and Wednesday to speak at a rally for area McDonald's managers, earned a new nickname, too.

"In all those (previous) years, my nickname with my buddies was 'Snack Bar,''' Cisna said. "You know what they call me now? 'Snack Bar Jr.'"

What turned out to be a life-changing experience for the now-56-year-old Cisna began in January 2014 as a classroom experiment for three students in Cisna's sophomore science class at Colo-Nesco High School in tiny Colo, Iowa.

"Because three of the kids were going on to college in the medical field, I had an idea, 'Hey, how would you like to prove or disprove this hypothesis: Is it possible for a person to become better off eating nothing but McDonald's for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 90 days?'," Cisna said in an interview with AL.com today. "That's how it got started."

wow...terribly sorry for you, friend.

Any chance at all of surgery to help the problem? I don’t mean to pry but really, my heart goes out to you.

The lumbar region I could get 30% relief. The cervical region I could get about 60%, and am investigating that.

The Thoracic region, no surgeon will touch because of proximity to the heart.

Laser Spine institute say they can give me about 50% relief, but will take approximately 10 procedures, with me responsible for approx $20,000 up front for each one. Needless to say I won’t be visiting the Laser Sine institute anytime soon.

No matter what I do though I should be on my pain meds because they kept me walking, and not walking is accelerating the issues. Problem is Insurance won’t pay for the one I’ve been on, and When I showed the doctor what they would pay for she accused me of being a drug seeker and just quit seeing me. Because of the laws here there are no others who treat people like me. I have an appointment 150 miles away on the 20th. Hopefully that gets me back on some meds, and into some form of physical therapy, so I can get my legs back.

Look for articles on ‘gut flora and weight control’. Current thinking is that the mix of bacteria living in your gut can determine your body mass. The fact that you eat properly but cannot lose weight is classic sign that this might be what you are dealing with.

So what do they recommend? Taking pro-biotics?

I watch portions and exercise 3 or more times a week...and am stuck.

6’6’’, actually. I know one of these personally. He got up to 325 after he retired, but lost 80 pounds and then a few more in a year and a half. Now at 230 and still 6’6’’. 36 waist pants. No elastic. But he does have a bizarre delight in wearing 38s and showing off the gap. It’s very irritating.

“If he can fit into 36” pants at 220 lbs, he must be a tall guy.” He would have to be at least 6’ 8” tall. I’m 6’ and weigh 176 and have a hard time getting into my size 36” pants. And those pants also have an elastic waist band.

Depends on body structure and even fitness. I'm about 176 myself and 5'11" - my pants are 34" and I have a little extra room in them. My body is muscular from working out (have a Bow Flex and an elliptical and use them often) for being 62 years old and my waist is lean w/o the extra "padding" that can add a few inches to an otherwise "properly-weighted" man.

If not for the extreme anxiety, tension, insomnia and risk of sudden death; hyperthyroidism would be great.

Not even being sarcastic. There are a few good side effects in addition to a high metabolism. The negatives are bad enough that I keep taking my anti thyroid meds. My family is much happier when I do!

“When I showed the doctor what they would pay for she accused me of being a drug seeker and just quit seeing me.”

I’d have that woman up before an ethics board, a state medical examiner etc. etc with an accusation like that. That is outrageous and I am certain you’d have some type of recourse.

Traveling 150 miles due to this woman’s unprofessional behavior is terrible. I do hope you make a few calls and see what can be done about the issue.

I understand you just can’t go to a hospital across the street after such a bad experience but there must be something that can be done.

I have considered legal action against her, but in the condition I’m in it doesn’t seem possible right now.
I am tied up right now in my 3rd year of trying to get my disability, and also make the early move to Medicare.
If I can complete that task (one I really didn’t want to do) it should allow me to go back to the meds that helped me for 10 years.
After that the wife and I are moving to southern NM, and drier, warmer climate as a means of lessening the symptoms.
An attorney told me I probably have a case, but it’s going to be long, and expensive, and said if I wasn’t seeking huge monetary victory, most wouldn’t take it on.
The laws here are written by democrats. They have approached the Pain med issue the same way they do guns.
There were problems with people abusing these drugs, but instead of going after the abusers, and the dealers, they went after the doctors, and took it away from people like me with legitimate needs. And just like guns, it hasn’t worked. The ones who were abusing the pain meds, and their dealers have moved on to Heroin, and we people in real daily pain have been abandoned.
The situation is frustrating, infuriating, and depressing, and all that on top of being in blinding pain 20 hours a day.
I have come very close to the edge of the “cliff” a few times, but somehow God keeps pulling me back, and strengthening my patience.

I’m 6’3” and weight 230. I might get into a size 40” with an elastic band. That’s why I’m having a hard time believing this 220-pounder can fit into size 36.

*shrugs*... Back in the day, when I was 6-pack fit, I was 6'2" / 265/275, and was pretty much 36-38" at the waist... And always XXXLT t-shirts... BIG ain't necessarily FAT.

BIG ain't necessarily FAT.

Absolutely correct. However in middle America these days, I'd say 99% of the BIG people are FAT. And the so-called "poor" people are among the fattest.

Well, I have been on that end of things too - pretty well lost the use of my legs in my 40's, lost everything, sat in a chair for 7 years, and ballooned way past 400lbs... On one meal a day... So I ain't so quick to judge.
