After their first presidential debates, it is time for Republicans to get serious. Donald Trump wont be their nominee. Neither will Ben Carson. Nor will any of the men in the 5 p.m. undercard event last week. Despite Carly Fiorinas strong performance, it is hard to believe that the GOP would turn to someone who was fired as Hewlett-Packard s CEO in 2005 after a tenure charitably described as controversial, and whose only run for elective office resulted in a landslide loss in 2010 to Sen. Barbara Boxer in California.
There are only five candidates with a plausible path to the Republican nomination: two sitting senators ( Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz), two sitting governors ( Scott Walker and John Kasich), and a former governor ( Jeb Bush). They represent a choice among very different persons, but alsoand more fundamentallybetween competing strategies for the future of the Republican Party.
First, the candidates as individuals. Ted Cruz is running as the tea partys Mr. Conservativeaggressively antigovernment except for national defense, with an explicit appeal to Christian social conservatives. John Kasich is this generations compassionate conservative, who cites his faith as justification for expanding Medicaid and extending unconditional love to gays and lesbians. Scott Walker is the fighting conservative who fires supporters hopes that he will stick it to the liberals in Washington, as he did to public-sector unions in Wisconsin....

“NB issue?”
Ben Carson is quoted saying that him and Al Sharpton are friends and get along fine. Now this is something I read today and haven’t checked out the source.
Galston..whiny lefty at the WSJ.
As a writer there, he is the worst!
I agree that all five are plausible candidates, and far better than the Crone Capitalist, Uncle Bernie or Plugs.
I also think there are 12 other announced republican candidates who would be an improvement on what we have now.
Cruz — Yes! Cruz or lose!
Walker — I would vote for him if he was the nominee. He’s my firewall if Cruz doesn’t make it and some damn lower RINO (see below) is still in it.
Rubio — NO GANGS! I don’t care in you were in MS-13, Crips, Bloods or Eights. no Gangsters!
Kase-Itch — Makes me want to break out the aloe vera and calamine lotion. No thanks.
JED — No more Bushes, Clintons, Kennedy’s Jenners or Kardashians. We’ve had it with these people! Not only that JED Bush sucks. There. I’ve said it.
Will you support Mister Trump when (not if) he announces his third party run?
(Perot got 0 electoral votes in 92, and 0 in 96. Trump would as badly, as is his plan.)
Some say his mom was not a citizen when she have birth to him in Canada
Cruz is the only one of these 5 that wouldn’t “Comprehensively Screw Americans Out Of Their Country.
Try to find a plausible journalist at the WSJ.
Who Owns The WSJ aka the Chamber Of Crony Capitalism newsletter .
Another day and another smear by a Rupert Murdoch Paid Media assassin !
I hope his left wing boys destroy his empire in a decade .
It's looking that way .
He would probably go third if Jeb is the nominee, and so what difference does it make.
Trump will do far better in open primaries than Bush. People like to compare Trump to Perot, but they forget most of Perot's support came from independents and democrats. Trump will do very well among those voters, many of whom would never vote for a GOPe candidate, especially one named Bush.
I agree. The only people I see toting Kasich are people in the media. most regular people I talk to don’t know him, and it’s hard to imagine him getting much greater name recognition outside the rust belt.
Walker, Bush, Cruz and Rubio all, I think, have a shot. I wouldn’t even count out Trump, frankly. I think the base is so anti establishment right now that he could pull it off.
Then they’re high. She was born in Delaware. Now Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal...
“Perot got 0 electoral votes in 92, and 0 in 96. “
But everyone says he was the ultimate spoiler that got Clinton elected and re-elected!
Those primaries are a long way off, and I do think there’s a strong possibility Trump will self destruct. He does control a large part of the protest vote for the moment, but there are only so many protestors. You can imagine the moderate/centrists in blue states will rally to Jebbie just like they did for McCain and Romney.
He would win a third party race with Hilde beast and insert the DC GOP sock puppet ( Walker, Jebbie, Rubio, Carly) .
Trump could win big.
People are fed up.
Even my college age kids and there friends know Trump and like him.
That is why the DC elite and Media scum and KStreet are scared .
