U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, says Chattanooga unfortunately has joined a group of U.S. cities that have been the victims of what he called radical Islamic terrorism.
And if he's made president in 2016, he would stop that trend, he said Monday.
Cruz, who is seeking the Republican nod in the 2016 presidential election, stood before a crowd of more than 800 Monday during a Tennessee campaign tour that started in Chattanooga.

Monday's event was held at GraceWorks Church, on Lee Highway. The rally was first planned to be at Republican headquarters, but Chattanooga Tea Party President Mark West, who is also chairman of Cruz's campaign in Southeast Tennessee, said public interest quickly outgrew the space.
And minutes before Cruz arrived Monday, West was still moving chairs and trying to make more room.
"We really kind of exceeded the capacity of this auditorium , " West said ... after the event.

During an event in Murfreesboro, Tenn., later Monday, Cruz filled a gymnasium and event staff eventually had to turn away supporters because of local safety codes, West said.
From there, Cruz went to Franklin, Jackson and into Mississippi today. He also plans to visit the Memphis area today, West said Monday.
Cruz's strategy appears to be to target mid-sized cities and energize local Republicans on their home turf. And that plan seems to be unfolding after Cruz picked up support after the first GOP presidential debate last week.
He said Monday that Tennessee would play a "critical role" in the primary.
Tennessee will be an early battleground after primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. So-called Super Tuesday is a mere 10 days after South Carolina's primary.
"Tennessee is going to play a critical role in the Republican presidential primary," Cruz told the crowd of supporters.

that’s a wonderful sentiment, but it ignores the fact that we have another 17 months of obama foreign policy that has to run it’s course. there is no telling how bad this is going to be by then.
our candidates may be making promises that are impossible to cash.
Here’s a start: don’t send them weapons...
With due respect, that's a pretty shallow reading of this. First, the point is that calling it out as radical Islamic terrorism is the first necessary step - he's ridiculing Obama and others who refuse to call it what it is. The second part of your statement is only applicable if Cruz were assuming this would be easy...and he's not.
The only way to stop it is a radioactive waste dump where Mecca currently stands. I don’t see any U.S. politician having the cojones to do it (and the Israelis won’t unless as a response to a WMD attack on their country).
Big statement with no bite....so what’s the point?
I doubt he’ll be able to stop it without nuking Mecca and maybe Medina, because that will be what it will take to stop it once and for all.
Mohammed said Mecca would never be destroyed.
Prove the bloody thieving, murdering pedophile pirate wrong, and his religion becomes meaningless.
However, I’ll be happy if Pres. Cruz just PUNISHES the bloody savages and makes their treachery more difficult.
It's easy to forget that most folks do not immerse themselves in the Political World as we do here. At one time, the campaigns did not begin until Labor Day and we've been at it for several months already. I think a lot of folks out there just began to take notice after the debate. And the fact that Ted got a nice bump is very encouraging.
You first...what is YOUR point? What would YOU have Cruz say in CHATTANOOGA???
Second would be to stop importing muslims into OUR country.
Cruz has said considerably more on the subject despite not saying it in this particular statement.
He has spoken about being a lot choosier about what wars we decide to insert ourselves into and being a lot choosier about which allies we pick.
He’s spoken about serious training of our proven allies the Kurds. Giving them the weapons they actually need rather than just enough small arms to keep them fighting rather than winning. Real air support rather than this halfhearted crap they’re getting now.
Anyone who will effect the demise of islam has my vote.
I would tell Ted if I could to Campaign big in Kentucky
home of Mitch “Obama’s Bitch” McConnell. Send Mitch a message that his own folk support Ted.
Happy-sounding BS that no President can actually do.
If elected I hope he will improve diplomatic relations with Israel.
I've been at it steady for 30 years...since a young'un....not months. But to your point, it's a very easy simple blunt and effective tactic to call it radical Islamic terror and point out the liberals will not do so. That's a great way to muscle into a few % of the low info minds. I stand by my point..this is a good move on Cruz' part. And yes, it is encouraging he got a debate bump....he didn't have enough questions to really accomplish much....so I'm doubly glad.
Tell that to the morons buying Saint Donald’s bomb em and take their stuff BS.
One of his five first day actions is to move our embassy to Jerusalem. How's that?
