More parents turn to homeschooling: 62% increase [Proverbs 22:6]

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More parents than ever before are choosing to homeschool their children, driving a movement that’s grown by 62 percent in the last decade. The National Catholic Register reports that recent data from the U.S. Department of Education shows explosive growth in homeschooling among American families, particularly in the last 10 years, when the number of students between the ages of 5 and 17 went from 1.09 million in 2003 to 1.77 million in 2012.

Homeschooled students now represent about 3.4 percent of the school-age population, a percentage that’s increased significantly for a variety of reasons. “The first one would be to have them get an individualized education that meets the needs of each student; the second was that we were drawn to a classical curriculum; and the third would be flexibility in time with family,” Fredericksburg, Va. homeschool mother Christina Banks told the news site of her reasons for educating her children at home.

“It has become demystified, and it’s become more acceptable, socially and culturally, for people to home school,” Mike Donnelly, a homeschooling father and attorney with the Home School Legal Defense Foundation, told the Register...

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old , he will not depart from it.

The staggering ignorance of most young Americans regarding the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Founding Forefathers, Free Market Economies, totalitarianism, and the Bible is a testament to our sodomite/socialist-infected public schools. Rather than teaching our next generation the critical thinking skills that will prepare them for the information age, our American students are being socially engineered in industrial age schools to give unwavering support for socialist/homosexual groupthink (i.e. School children taught to praise Obama, School Lesson portraying Obama as Messiah)

Hitler was famously quoted as saying, “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.” The same spirit that overcame Germany in the aftermath of WWI has overcome the United States of America. As a college professor who teaches business students at a Big 10 University, I have noticed that after ~18 years of successive socialist/homosexual public school worldview indoctrination, America students are unable to think clearly and critically about government, economic, and social/moral issues. Why do you think Indians and other foreigners are taking all of our technical jobs?!?!

Homeschool is not a panacea, but I believe it is part of the solution. Children who are trained by their parents with a Biblical classical (Newtonian) worldview have a foundation of moral/critical thinking that enables them to excel at whatever path they choose to endeavor. Parents can also teach them information age wisdom and discipline. They can teach them that the government is answerable to the people and that the 2nd Amendment is is the final "check and balance" of an unjust government. Without this foundation, even college graduates do not know their proverbial "left hand from their right". Below are frightening statistics that the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) has gathered on college senior knowledge...

• 71% of Americans failed the civics knowledge test;
• 51% of Americans could not name the three branches of government;
• The average score for college seniors on the civics knowledge test was 54.2% (an “F” by any standard);
• The average student’s test score improved only 3.8 points from freshman to senior year;
• Freshmen at Cornell, Yale, Princeton, and Duke scored better than seniors (at the same schools) on the civics knowledge test.
• 79% of elected officials that took the civics knowledge quiz did not know the Bill of Rights expressly prohibits the government from establishing a religion.
• 30% of office holders did not know that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” are the inalienable rights referred to in the Declaration of Independence.
• 27% of politicians could not name even one right or freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment.
• 43% did not know the purpose of the Electoral College.
• 39% of lawmakers believe the power of declaring war belongs to the president.
• The average score for college professors who took the civics knowledge quiz was 55%!

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Great post.

Public schooling is not about an education. Government education is about forming people into the cookie cutter form governments so choose. It’s about “control” of the masses. There’s a lot of information about the roots of Government education.

They’re withdrawing from government schooling. This will continue to radicalize government schools. Until we transition to vouchers and give real school choice, including home schooling, the government-run schools will become more and more radical.

This is one of the few hopeful signs I see today. Forty years ago, home schooling was unheard of.

Warehousing children is the greatest triumph of the progressive movement. If some alien came down from space, he would not believe that we willingly pry our kids, crying and screaming, away from their parents to be put in virtual prisons in the most important years of their development.

When we were homeschooling our two boys 10 - 15 years ago, my husband and I said this is the best decision we ever made; and we still think that. The only bit of light in these darkening times is the fact that this movement is growing.

With so many options now: direct instruction by a parent-educator, on-line courses, co-ops, tutoring. dozens and dozens of year-by-year homeschooling "kits" and textbook sets available, oodles of newsletters and support groups sparkling with good ideas: there's no excuse not to homeschool.

It call it akin to criminal negligence, to go through all the sacrifice to have kids and then allow them to be degraded and deformed by a public school. I really mean that.

I don’t see a problem with that. Government-run schools develop the next generation of peasants. Home-schooling parents raise the next generation of responsible adults.

When talking to people I support this.  And when they say they are doing it, I heap mountains of praise on them.

Homeschooling; great idea. Except...

What are you proposing to do about radical jihadis homeschooling their children? Suicide-Vest-Making 101 and such?

How about the New Black Panthers homeschooling their children? Hatin’-Whitey 101, Arson 101, etc.?

Illiterate illegal tribal people from the hills of Central America homeschooling their children? ?

Same-sex “parents” homeschooling their children? Sex Ed 101?

Treasonous Democrats homeschooling their children? Hate-America 101?

Clearly there are some significant flaws in the concept of homeschooling, depending on who is doing the educating, and what they are teaching.

I don’t have a suggestion, but I definitely see a problem. There is no way to ensure that only “good” people are allowed to homeschool.

Don't see your argument. In every case you mentioned, the problem is avoidable by simple common sense laws...

Homeschool is not the problem causing Jihad. Letting in foreigners from terrorist countries is the problem. Allowing mosques to preach Jihad in every town in America is the problem.

Homeschool is not the problem causing people to "hate whites". Radical indoctrination from Black Panthers and La Raza is the problem. We used to keep these groups in line.

Homeschool is not causing "same sex marriage and adoption". Judicial activism is at fault. The Legislative Branch needs to override the Judicial Branch.

Don't see your argument.

No. You completely missed my point.

Perhaps intentionally.

Or perhaps I didn't articulate it clearly enough.

No problem.

Have a nice day.

It hasn’t grown explosively, that is the percentage it was when I was homeschooling 10 years ago. Total homeschool and private school population still 10% or less. drop in bucket.
