Thinking the Unthinkable: Donald Trump, GOP Nominee
The Huffington Post ^ | July 29th, 2015 | Chris Weigant

Posted on 07/29/2015 6:23:32 PM PDT by Mariner

t's time to think about what has previously been in the realm of the unthinkable: Donald Trump might just become the Republican nominee for president. Two months ago, that statement would have elicited nothing but a big old belly laugh from just about anyone who pays any attention to politics. Nowadays, though, nobody's laughing. The very concept has moved from the surreal to the possible. So it's time to actually think about what it would mean for the country and for the Republican Party.

Trump, we were all assured by the inside-the-Beltway media crowd, was going to be nothing more than an entertaining sideshow. His "support," such as it was, would soon collapse, after Trump said something so outrageous that it drove people away. Trump would be a flash in the pan, and then we could all go back to contemplating the Republican candidates who easily met the inside-the-Beltway crowd's measure of being "Very Serious People." Trump would quietly fade away as the real Republican race got underway.

I probably shouldn’t enjoy watching the Karl Rove types become terrorized by their loss of control. But, I do enjoy it.

“He might stop the invasion & that would stop the democratic plan to flood the nation with a 100 year voting block. That’s all this is about.”

Boehner, McConnell and Preibus are not going to stop it. They are owned by the cheap labor lobby....US Chamber, Bus Roundtable who want el cheapo south of the border labor first.

Well if Trump is nominated, it will be fun seeing so many of his intraparty “rivals” endorsing and campaigning with HRC. Jebbie will lead the charge!

If Trump won the nomination it would be a watershed moment in American Histroy. I do not think he would serve just one term. America would roll back progressive ideas. Trump would give America leadership—he would be hated by many—as many did reagan—until Trumponomics was shown to work.

If voting for Trump is required to make the establishment politically terminal, then it would be a pleasure.

Hmmm...I can remember thinking there was no way that empty suit from Illinois could be elected President.

Strange things do happen.

What if Trump wins say 40% of delegates, and the rest of field wins 60%. Can the RNC then nominate any one they choose by grouping the 60% for Bush or Walker or Rubio or Christie?

"Can the RNC then nominate any one they choose by grouping the 60% for Bush or Walker or Rubio or Christie?"

There are a minimum number of ballot calls, I believe 3.

After those, it's an open convention.

that's when the street fighting starts:)

Trump won’t be the nominee but he is doing conservatives a favor by shaking up the GOPe.

Why he’d be easy meat for Hilliary Clinton - the smartest woman in the world - to dispose of.

*******

"President Hillary": The Russian and Iranian bullies will eat the Hillary-Bill Clinton combo alive. Sorry Hillary.

Trump is nobody’s puppet. He cow-tows to no one. Hope he survives to become Prez or Vice Prez to Cruz. It’s time to clean up the DC corruption rampant in both parties!

Do you leftie winged monkey rag peddlers think having a President who was never even a CITIZEN of the country, and who despises the country and actively works against her, is “unthinkable” too??

I think it’s more than just that. I look for ISIS to get bolder in the US and to US people abroad. I look for China to throw its wt around again and Russia and of course more immigration stuff. I see Trump’s life being threatened, and he shows true grit. American’s like that.

Yes. I think I could take a chance on Trump for at least four years.

Poor Hillary: I'm sorry, but I think that the Muslim terror group ISIS and the Iranian bullies would eat alive "President Hillary" and her key adviser husband Bill. Sorry Hillary.

Here the media is picking the GOP Presidential candidate. Here we go again another mushy middle of the road candidate that sounds like he is a tiger, but in reality is more a baby cub. Let’s be real, is Trump the person that is wanted as the GOP candidate. just call back Romny than if Trump is the answer, just another rich idiot that will do nothing when it comes time for reality to strike. DO NOT GET SUCKED IN BY TRUMP

“...shows what the Republicans think of us...”

They’ve been showing us for years. We just haven’t been paying attention. It’s been a giant middle finger to middle America - from BOTH parties.

When Trump gets the nod, we finally get a chance to show them what we think of them - and strangely, that ALSO resembles a giant middle finger, FROM middle America.

Changes were made to make sure that didn’t happen again. Heck, even the primary delegates can be changed if the GOP doesn’t like the results.

I saw it first hand in Iowa last time Romney lost, but that isn’t the result the GOP wanted to they announced that he won. It took the Paul people at the local caucuses and threats of lawsuits to change that (which was to late for Santorum).

Do you really thing they will let Trump win? The nomination process is not handled the same way as an election.
