In one of this year's most intense international competitions, the United States has come out as best in the world and this time, we're not talking about soccer.
This week, the top-ranked math students from high schools around the country went head-to-head with competitors from more than 100 countries at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Chiang Mai, Thailand. And, for the first time in more than two decades, they won.
Po-Shen Loh, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and head coach for Team USA, says the competition is held over the course of two days. Students work on three math problems eac

Ha! Yeah, women are wonderful but most aren’t math geniuses. I’m very proud of all those nerdy kids!
Home schooled?
I’m guessing: Indian, Chinese and Jewish! Congrats to all.
I do know what you are saying BUT on the same token, I doubt that the other countries picked from anywhere but the top .05% either!
You are quite right - I was just being a bit humorous since those young men were in high school and probably spent their time studying. Unfortunately the schools weren’t mentioned.
Well there was a winning black debate team last year (see link and excerpt of opinion piece by Dennis Prager below), but they got to go freestyle and ignore any kind of traditional debate rules. So maybe math contests will someday get with the program and let them “nigga” it up.

The undermining of the very concept of values was starkly made clear last month at a national inter-college debate tournament.
As reported in the Atlantic last week:
On March 24, 2014 at the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Championships at Indiana University, two Towson University students, Ameena Ruffin and Korey Johnson, became the first African-American women to win a national college debate tournament, for which the resolution asked whether the U.S. presidents war powers should be restricted. Rather than address the resolution straight on, Ruffin and Johnson, along with other teams of African-Americans, attacked its premise. The more pressing issue, they argued, is how the U.S. government is at war with poor black communities.
In the final round, Ruffin and Johnson squared off against Rashid Campbell and George Lee from the University of Oklahoma, two highly accomplished African-American debaters with distinctive dreadlocks and dashikis. Over four hours, the two teams engaged in a heated discussion of concepts like nigga authenticity and performed hip-hop and spoken-word poetry in the traditional timed format. At one point during Lees rebuttal, the clock ran out but he refused to yield the floor. F the time! he yelled.
In a national intercollegiate debate contest, a black debating team won by transforming the topic of the debate, one that that had nothing to do with race, into a race question.
But to object to this, or to argue that a team might be disqualified for yelling f the time when told it had gone over the time limit, or to ask what performing hip-hop has to do with the topic whether the U.S. presidents war powers should be restricted is now deemed to act white.
This is another victory for the left. And another defeat for standards, for truth and for the values embodied by the men in the paintings of the Founders.
“Indian, Chinese and Jewish!”
And one Stoner!
I’m no mathlete but I can tell you that a 6 year old running at 8 mph after an ice cream truck driving 10 mph files 7.4ft when you trip him.
Actually I think that the middle 3 with last names of Stoner, Kural & Alweiss, there may be 2 of other derivation. What is more important is that each of them had parent(s) who probably said EDUCATION FIRST, SECOND and LAST! Following the parents probably came teachers who felt much the same way.
What we need is our entertainment media to look at accomplishments like this as being as worthy of glorification as gangsters, filth and envy! For this topic, I remember the GREAT Movie from 1988, "Stand and Deliver" about the real person, Jamie Escalante, a Bolivian born educator famous for teaching calculus at a disadvantaged high school in East Los Angeles, California. Escalante was portrayed by Edward James Olmos who earned an Academy Award NOMINATION for that role (before becoming Captain of the Galactica).
I’m glad they all lernt their tootems and gazzentas, just like Jethro Bodine.
tootems 2 is 4 tootems 4 is 8
2 gazzenta 4, 2 times 2 gazzenta 8, 4 times
Otherwise known as “cypherin”.
But after he was muy caliente as Lt. Castillo in "Miami Vice."
I certainly agree that the entertainment has GOT to turn away from depictions of drug addicts, drug lords, drug sellers and, for once, concentrate on the good work that so many Americans do. Not just the military but the ordinary folk who people this land.
I would say, though, that to excel in math, it also takes a bit of smart genes as well as good parenting. (I had both and still barely passed!)
Rules, what rules?
Anyway, logic and reason are “white male constructs”, so reasons a “professor”.
