In the face of Israeli outrage over the Iran nuclear accord, the Pentagon is moving quickly to reinforce arguably the strongest part of the U.S.-Israeli relationship: military cooperation.
But officials say Washington has no plans to offer new weaponry as compensation for the Iran deal.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter left for Tel Aviv on Sunday to push ahead with talks on ways the U.S. can further improve Israel's security not just with Iranian threats in mind, but an array of other challenges, including cyberdefense and maritime security.
Israel also has expressed concern that U.S. sales of advanced weaponry to Gulf Arab states has the potential of offsetting, to some degree, Israel's qualitative military edge.
Aides said in advance of the trip that although Carter strongly supports the Iran deal, he had no intention of trying to reverse Israeli opposition to it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced the deal as a mistake of historic proportion.

With Israel's innovation and expertise, the new weapons will likely be quite good, and available to others as well as Israel.
Ash Carter doesn’t control that department any more than I did when I was in uniform. They should’ve said that Valerie Jarrett nixed any extra for Israel.
Every time I see an arms deal (be it to Israel or others) it is always the indebted USA taxpayers and middle class citizens getting the bill from GE or General Dynamics. It is long past time that politicians start sending the bill to actual recipients instead of being pretentious and pretending to be generous rich uncles with other people’s (OUR) money.
You are correct, any weapons deal that involves the US government is simply crony capitalists (Fascists) wearing a new path to the taxpayer filled feeding trough.
I’ve read that Israel and Saudi Arabia have been in deep conference lately. I don’t blame Israel at all. It is obvious they have no ally as long as Obama is President. In fact they need to watch what info they allow the United States to learn about. Israel is focused on the image of it’s survival. Obama has decided to focus on the image of United States sublimation , subjection and eventual demise.
Ash Carter needs to be handed a piece of paper saying his presence is no longer needed and that Israel has taken care of the Iran problem.
“With Israel’s innovation and expertise, the new weapons will likely be quite good, and available to others as well as Israel. “
Having worked for both an Israeli defense company and many US companies, I can attest that Israeli equipment is frequently superior to what we field. The problem they have is cost. They don’t, for example, make their own airplanes. The costs are prohibitive. Ours are cheaper because the lines supply not only the US but many forwign countries. So, the same, say, fighter jet with similar capabilities would cost many times more per copy than buying a US plane. Even if the Israeli model is superior, they can’t afford enough of them.
I suspect that if Israel goes to war it will be the first war fought almost entirely by drones. Tiny, cheap and disposable...drones.
Several of our Boeing YAL-1 Airborne Laser weapons system with a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) mounted inside a modified Boeing 747-400F. It is primarily designed as a missile defense system to destroy tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs), while in boost phase. The aircraft was designated YAL-1A in 2004 by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Just as a start! We may also need to give Israel a couple of our mothballed Aircraft Carriers so they can project their air power closer to Iran when they attack their nuclear sites.
However, there is the fissionables, fusionables and rare earths supply to be considered. That would indicate Russia and China.
Israel has little problem with Russia and China, while Russia and China both have considerable problems with Saudi Arabia.
Can a three way deal be made with some startlingly good diplomacy to arm up all four with the most modern nukes on the planet? Can relations be smoothed and trusted between Israel - Saudi Arabia - Russia/China? Caliphate builders want to know.
You are correct, when I talk weapons I tend to understate a little, it lets the uninformed stay engaged a little longer before they start the “we can’t lose” bravado.
Israel had better look elsewhere.
Israel is too honest for the White Mosque
which clings to Iran and N. Korea and Turkey
and ISIS and al Qaeda.
Just what year, whom is POTUS and where are the DemoRat members of Congress and the Rat Media in this scenario?
Most all of the free world is too honest for the White Mosque.
In general, why would Russia and China have problems doing business with Saudi Arabia? Is it a case of Three Meglomaniacs meet in a bar, and say “This town (the developed world) aint big enough for all three of us”?
While China and to some extent Russia, are willing to do business, these actions are not taken lightly.
I see. That’s a big reason to mistrust any deal involving the Saudis. Israel almost has no choice but to hold their nose and get a strong partner however possible. Russia and China are not as desperate, and can wait for decades before committing.
I imagine Ash has a big pile of something to place on the table if China, Russia, England, France + Germany agree. P5+1 don’t want Iran with a bomb.
Still, US crony capitalist desire for their cut of Saudi oil profits in a controlled US market, dictated the necessity that the Saudis had nothing to do with 9/11, and Saudi money did not advance Wahhabi extremist terrorism outside of Saudi Arabia, especially not in the US.
Just ask the lamestream media if ya don't believe it.
The Russians have been dealing with these Saudis since they were Soviet Union Communists, and the Chinese since back when the were Economic Communists. It's ancient history for them.
I neglected to mention why US equipment is frequently of lower utility or reliability than Israeli equipment. In many of the cases I’ve dealt with the company proposed a change or upgrade that would improve the US equipment. The primary reason for turning the request/proposal down was the cost and impracticability of changing all of the Technical Orders, processes, procedures or drawing packages to reflect the proposed change.
The Israelis can implement a critical change in as little as 24 hours. Not only are their documentation rules looser, but there are many fewer copies to change out. Thus, if changing something improves the equipment’s utility, reliability or other factors, the cost is much lower to implement the change.
Again, you are correct, for all the good it’ll do.
