I was having some connectivity problems earlier, so I’ve reloaded those tunes to the Drumbo server. Hopefully they’ll work now.
Randy Hansen is undoubtedly the best Hendrix tribute artist around. He spends a lot of time in Europe and the former Soviet countries and is truly loved by his fans. His shows are very old school, replicating a live Hendrix concert with authentic wardrobe, mannerisms and a remarkable ability to mimic Jimi’s voice.
Our “Roomful of Mirrors” tribute takes a very different approach trying to take it to the next level by incorporating many of Jimi’s studio effects into a “new school” live show which was just not possible with the tech of Jimi’s time. With today’s technology we can replicate back-masking (guitar in reverse) and a whole myriad of effects that were impossible to produce live until recently. With equipment like the looping station my guitarist can lock in a rhythm guitar part and then solo over it, effectively overdubbing live. With my Wave drum (synthesizer) I can recreated almost any percussion instrument (from tympani to congas) or sound effect (from thunder to rainstorms and ocean waves). We also have a part of the show where we perform cover songs that we believe Jimi would have covered in his own unique style. (Imagine McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed”, Bowie’s “Ashes To Ashes” or Brian Wilson’s “That’s Not Me” and “Don’t Talk” performed by Jimi).

What i dig about the greats is they get it all, electric acoustic, slide.
I was just having a sing song with a friend last night and I said in you strum that over the bridge it will be sharp and attack, go up over the siud hole and it will get fat, above the sound hole it will get fatter and muddier.

There’s no doubt that Jimi was moving into other realms. His story is tragic as he was stifled by record company contracts (who in those days were interested only in hit singles, and after all his first album produced 5!) and management struggles with Michael Jeffreys who single handedly torpedoed his Band of Gypsys project in favor of the Experience template. From the release of “Hey Joe” in England in 1967 until 9 days before his death in 1970, Jimi toured almost constantly and when he wasn’t touring he was in the studio. Once the Electric Ladyland studios were completed, he jammed almost constantly with anyone he could round up, from Elvin Bishop to John Lennon. Everyone wanted a piece of Jimi and in late 1970 he was exhausted and depressed.
There are many conspiracy theories about his death and I hate to jump on that bandwagon, but there are a lot of inconsistencies in the autopsy and eye-witness accounts. Why Monika Dannemann waited so long to call an ambulance on the morning of September 18, 1970 remains a controversy. Dannemann claimed in her official statement that she found him unresponsive but alive around 11:00 AM and called the ambulance at 11:18 AM. However, Chas Chandler, Jimi’s former manager, claims she called him much earlier and asked him to come to her flat and help wake Jimi and it was he that told her to call an ambulance. The ambulance arrived at 11:27 AM and Dannemann stated at the inquest that he was alive when he was placed in the ambulance and she rode with him to St. Mary Abbots Hospital. Police and ambulance statements discount her statements as they stated no one was at the residence upon their arrival and that Hendrix was already deceased. The official cause of death was listed as “inhalation of vomitus” and “barbiturate intoxication” although the death certificate reports “insufficient evidence of circumstances” resulting in an “open verdict.” Evidence has surfaced that Jimi’s lungs were full of wine (he drowned) although his blood alcohol level was low.
Dannemann a former figure skater made a career of being Jimi’s girlfriend at the time of his death and whatever the truth was, it died with her in 1996 when she was found dead in a fume-filled Mercedes Benz. Her death was ruled a suicide but, her husband, rock star Uli Jon Roth publicly stated his opinion that her death had been the result of foul play which just adds fuel to the conspiracy.
The black hole of Youtube is full of the conspiracy theories ranging from murder by Michael Jefferys before his management contract expired and former Animal bassist and Hendrix manager Chas Chandler returned, to outlandish claims that the Illuminati or Black Panthers had Jimi Killed. That others got rich off of Jimi’s talent and fame and tried to manipulate him for personal gain is undeniable but theories are just that and we may never know the real story. Perhaps he just took too many sleeping pills and couldn’t turn over to vomit.
Jimi’s fans and friends know he was the most talented and innovative guitarist of the 20th century and a gifted composer. At the time of his death he had plans to work with the likes of Miles Davis and Sun Ra. he was indeed moving on.
