With all respect, I still think you give them too much credit. I have observed autoloading 22s described as assault rifles. If it offends the media, its an assault rifle.

Four military members were killed this morning and at least one police officer injured, when a gunman opened fire on military recruitment offices and a U.S. Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Witnesses said they saw a single man fire a high-powered rifle at a military office in a strip mall from a convertible silver Mustang, before speeding away, around 10:50am.

Katherine Herridge is saying now on Fox News that sources are telling her that considering this happened at the end of Ramadan could mean something..and that they already know who the shooter is and that he is NOT military and he was never in the military so there goes the “Workplace violence” Theory..this is ISIS terrorism, someone working on behalf of ISIS

I can EASILY entertain my imagination with this photo...
Or a gubmint that wants to take your guns. The gubmint can recruit people through the Internet too, ya know.
Now that you said that ... what is to stop a very evil and corrupt government (like the one we have now) from sending in an "asset" to do the shooting and then use a different and well chosen "fall guy" who is conveniently killed or commits suicide to take the blame.
This could be used as a distraction from the Iran debacle and/or bring focus on gun control and/or several other nefarious reasons.
20 years ago this would be tin foil hat stuff ... but now ... I'm beginning to wonder
