Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) warned Monday that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walkers dissonance with his wife on same-sex marriage could cause him to be less active in his opposition.
Spouses matter, Santorum said in an editorial meeting with The Daily Caller.
When your spouse is not in-sync with you particularly on cultural issues, moral issues [you] tend not to be as active on those issues."
Walker panned last months Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide as a grave mistake where five unelected judges [took] it upon themselves to redefine the institution of marriage.
But while those views may put them in the majority of the Republican presidential field, which Walker is set to officially join Monday evening, hes on the outside looking in at the Walker household.
Walkers wife, Tonette, told The Washington Post that her children are very passionate about their support for same-sex marriage and noted that her cousin, to whom she is very close, is a lesbian. While she never specifically said she backed same-sex marriage, she noted that she disagrees with her husband on some issues and called the issue a a hard one.
Santorum is currently running towards the rear of the crowded Republican primary, 11th in the ealClearPolitics aggregation of recent polling. That would put him one spot out of the first Republican debate in August, which caps at the top 10.
But the runner-up for the nomination in 2012 believes he should be allowed to participate in the debates no matter what the polls say.
I call it the Masters exemption, (snip)

I don’t like Santorum at all.
Santoruman the White looked into their marriage with his palantir.
I can never forgive or forget Santorums support of Arlen Spector.
I agree about Jeb, but I think your thoughts on the other part are somewhat thin. Not trying to be insulting, but if he wasn’t try to say Walker’s wife could run him, why address it the way he did? Why bring her into it?
Simply state you have been watching Walker over time it seems clear to you his stance is more of a convenience that a true core belief.
It’s my take that Santorum was clearly trying to say Walker was subject to his wife’s notions. Could be wrong, but that’s my take.
I suppose Santorum has a point that spouses do matter in presidential politics today, but it makes me wonder if he would take this stance if he wasn’t scraping at the bottom of the polls. Kind of desperate, are we Rick? You couldn’t beat Romney the RINO in 2012 so you’re irrelevant now.
Santorum lacks class.
Whether you like him or not isn’t the issue. The issue is the division in the Walker household regarding gay marriage. Most on here want to attack the messenger. Santorum doesn’t have a prayer of getting the nomination, but, it’s good that he brought up this issue.
Okay, and perhaps Walker’s wife is very strong willed too.
She had enough gal to go to the W.P. for an interview.
I found that to be troubling.
My problem here with Santorum is that he chooses this as a way to criticize Walker and insert himself into the news. It is a pure below-the-waste political cheapshot. Seriously, we have not heard from Santorum since forever and he as <1% in any poll. Is this really how he wants to insert himself in the news? It is very discrediting.
Well, I can’t argue with that. I wouldn’t have worded it that way myself. But neither do I fault Santorum for his perspective because I also view Walker as weak on the issue. I did not know about his wife.
It’s not just his wife. Both his sons as well.
First Ladies matter. Look what Mooch has damaged.
Why is Walker’s wife even talking to the WaPo?
Message to Mrs. Walker:
The media will pay attention to you for one of two reasons ONLY -
1) To destroy you, or
2) To use you to destroy someone else
That’s IT. So I respectfully suggest that unless you want to be a played like a violin, tell them to get lost...or get something.
I appreciate the response, and I’m not trying to be difficult about it. I’ve said how I see it, but you’re entitled to see it different. I appreciate the mention. Take care.
Santorum shouldn't be bringing up crack, obviously.
Be that as it may, I don’t like Santorum.
Santorum isn’t doing anything differently than the other candidates who can’t get any news coverage right now due to the Donald. Trying to keep his name out there. I wasn’t aware of Bush II’s wife killing her boyfriend in a car accident. Do you have a source for that?
I don’t know the guy, but, wouldn’t vote for him either. He really is a non issue in this election.
When I met my wife she leaned Left but is now a Conservative. She even converted from Protestant to Catholic.
If a man cant achieve that with his wife, especially having children, then something is wrong with him.
I agree. And if we project out, just imagine during the general, or if he wins, how divisive the media will be by constantly pointing, emphasizing, focusing on the fact that the president’s WIFE believes in gay marriage. It would be the same as sasquatch wanting a border fence. Just imagine.
‘Santorm has a very sick mind. This is an heinous act. All I would say is that, whatever the motive is, it was a malicious one.’
