Donald Trump is on the rise — and that’s very bad news for the GOP
The Washington Post ^ | July 1st, 2015 | By Paul Waldman

Posted on 07/01/2015 4:19:50 PM PDT by Mariner

Donald Trump is surging. In a field that has grown to 16 Republican presidential candidates (once Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich make their candidacies official), Trump is now in second place pretty much wherever you look. A new Quinnipiac poll of Iowa voters shows him tied for second with Ben Carson; they each have 10 percent to Walker’s 18. The latest CNN/WMUR poll in New Hampshire also puts Trump in second, with 11 percent, behind only Jeb Bush at 16 percent. And in the Huffington Post Pollster average of national polls, Trump comes in a mere 0.7 percent behind Bush.

While everyone has treated the Trump story as an amusing sideshow to the campaign (which it certainly is), there’s a genuine danger for the GOP in his presence that goes beyond the simple fact that he makes the party look silly (which he certainly does). More than any other candidate, Trump is telling Latinos that the Republican Party doesn’t like them.

Now let’s be clear: It isn’t as though Trump is going to be a serious contender for the nomination. But he could also go significantly higher than he is now. Just think about what happened in 2012, when one ridiculous candidate after another shot to the front of the Republican primary race. At one point, Rick Perry was in the lead with 32 percent support. Herman Cain once led with 26 percent. Newt Gingrich topped the field with 35 percent. Rick Santorum was No. 1 with 34 percent. The 2016 race may or may not be that volatile, but it will certainly have some ups and downs, as one candidate or another will stumble and another will rise.

By the time you got to drunkard, you’d already revealed yourself for who you are.

When talking of Trump, I have tried to keep it on the point of what he said about immigration and trade. He did not support amnesty in his announcement speech.

Up until now, you have kept it on anything but his comments on immigration and trade.

Okay, back to, “Why you’re just a drunkard” comments, provided by Paris H... ah South40.

Ronald Reagan was a democRAT for years, wasn’t he?

..... and Trump will remain a potent interest, but he won’t be making it to the dance.

But he might have a say as to what music is played at the dance.

Right American culture, borders, language.

NOT about the military

The military takes an oath. So do elected politicians. No reason under the sun for the reps to be any less adherent to their oath than the military to theirs. It’s no less valuable

Nothing to do with weaponry or sending people into battle

It’s about borders language culture. It’s not even about economics

[ We’ve seen this movie before. It’s a Perot reboot ]

If that G_D D-MNED idiot Perot would have stayed in the election in 1992, even if he didn’t win and even if he still handed the election to Clinton, it would have built the legitimacy of an actual third party alternative to the two party power structure...

But the idiot got out of the F—ing race when he was EASILY taking over 25% of TOTAL votes then got back in a few eeks later essentially KILLING any 3rd party viability for the next 20-30 years....

What made him drop out then get back in (back in as a damned joke) in 1992....?

He should have toughed it out...

The left sure spends a LOT of ink on a guy that can't win, and is sure to destroy the Republican Party for a generation:)

I recall in 1977 that a certain Actor was portrayed that way.

Few years later, didn't seem that way.

One can hope.....

But frankly, if they have not changed their tune yet, I don’t want their song played..

Yes he was. But President Reagan was a conservative democrat who had switched parties decades prior to running for president. And once he switched he certainly never showed any allegiance or affinity toward the democrat party.

Conversely, liberal Donald Trump has been a democrat until just recently, he has given generously to the most corrupt of liberal democrats and their committees and has voiced his support for liberal causes such as gun control and amnesty for ILLEGAL aliens.

There is an enormous difference between the two.

So he didn't say so in his annoucement speech? BFD. He has done so since.

And you are supporting a PRO AMNESTY POS LIBERAL.

This is just one issue of many...

The rest of Trump’s political leanings have yet to even be asked..

I support what he’s doing on illegal immigration....100%, but I also know that Trump is really a moderate politically in most ways that count.

“The left sure spends a LOT of ink on a guy that can’t win”

I suspect Trump may be the only one, with the exception of possibly Cruse, who can win in the general election against Clinton...

No, I’m not supporting you.

I’m supporting Trump’s comments at his announcement.

Sorry for the confusion.

They write of ridiculous candidates rising to the top in 2012 and never list any, only conservative ones. Oh. I get it...

It could be cathartic. A chance to get a lot of stuff out in the open and out of our systems. I don’t see Trump winning or making a good president, but he’ll shake things up a bit and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
