For most of history people have had two periods of sleep each night, with the time in between being perhaps the most calm and relaxing part of their lives. Then came the lightbulb. This unexpected "two sleep" phenomenon was uncovered by historian Roger Ekirch when he began to do research for a history of the night:

Better you don't.
The Old World sleep patterns (1st and 2nd sleep), must have been genetically passed down through the ages because I, along with my entire paternal family, have been affected all of our lives.
These days I'm working 12 hour shifts, having to get up sometimes at 02:30. So you can imagine what a messed up insomniac I am.
LOLz.
I think his voice was dubbed in. South Pacific is one of my favs.
Ahh...a kindred spirit.
I get up at 6 AM and send Mom on her way (I'm retired, she's not).
Do my computer loop, take a shower about 9, nap for an hour, do the tasks on my list, take another 1 hour nap at 3 PM.
I'm bright eyed and bushy tailed when she gets home at 5.
You got Scooby Doo sheets too???!?
It’s when you stop getting up to go that it becomes a problem.
And here I thought I was just weird.
It happened to me on Molokai. We stayed at a resort on the island’s west end beach that had solar powered tentalos. The batteries only last 10 minutes after sunset so when the lights went out we fell into a natural sleeping pattern fast.
I always sleep about 2 or 3 times a night. Oh, wait, that’s because I have to get up to go to the bathroom.
Me too.....except I DO have to get up for work. :)
Yeah, I’ve read about this too. It seem so strange to me that people would have been doing this when there was no electric lights. But maybe they just went to be so early in those days that they had to wake up for a bit.
About 3:00 AM I have to listen to mellow classical music then drift back off.
LOL!
:-)
.
You’ve pretty much described my pattern. Up until I was about thirty I slept in one continuous block, but nowadays I usually wake up with some work related problem on my mind at around 2am. I’ll think about it for awhile, usually coming to some sort of resolution, then I’ll sleep again until five or six. I almost never sleep all the way through the night anymore.
Cool! This is what I do. Go to bed around 10, sleep until about 2 or 3, wake up and do some reading, some freeping, and go back to bed for a few more hours. It helps that I dont have to get up for work

Very similar to my schedule. I don’t have to get up to go to work either. I sometimes nap in the afternoon too. However, my son tells me that any sleep which lasts for three hours or more, can’t legitimately be called a “nap”.
Ping
I actualy do sleep like this.
because I can’t be sleepin, here I am freepin. Good article btw. Maybe I need to count sheep, delicious tasty roast sheep...
