A former CNN reporter shot and killed a man who allegedly tried to rob him and his wife at a northwest Albuquerque motel room Tuesday night.
Chuck de Caro, who is married to former CNN Headline News anchor Lynne Russell, has worked as an investigative reporter for CNN and other news organizations. The couple was staying at the Motel 6 at 6015 Iliff NW while on their way to California.
According to Russells account, de Caro was struck three times in the firefight before shooting and killing the offender, who hasnt been identified by police.
De Caro was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital and is expected to survive. He will be there about a week, Russell said.
The couple tried to talk to the suspect in an attempt to calm him down ... The couple, who both have concealed weapons permits, had two guns in the bedside table. Russell ... was able to flip one of them into her purse and handed the purse to de Caro.
The suspect got upset that de Caro wasnt giving him [a] briefcase and opened fire.
De Caro fired six rounds, and when he was finished the suspect was still firing. ... De Caro was hit three times in the abdomen, the leg and lower abdomen.
Russell said she had to dive behind a piece of furniture to avoid being hit. She said the suspect was a thin, black man wearing green and white.
She said he was agitated and seemed desperate. I knew he wouldnt mind shooting us, Russell said.

There are recorded incidents of people sucking up an entire magazine of .45 from a 1911, good COM hits, and not going down.
I wonder how many states they drove through that would have locked them up for having the weapons in their possession.
Low budget hotels are cottages for criminals.
“.35 caliber? Well, theres the problem...”
It couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a .32 or .38, so it’s a transcaliber.
Yes.
Btw, many times when there is a crime with just a vehicle description, cops will routinely check low budget hotel parking lots in the area for matches.
Ah, you’re curious about that briefcase thingy, aren’t you?
Lynne Russell, his wife, is the former CNN anchor, not him.
PSA....
While one can never have enough range time....I can tell yall this from experience...I dont give a damn how many hours one spends at the range...its a rare bird whose accuracy doesnt suffer when they been shot three times...their adrenaline is pumping like a horny dog on crack...and they are shooting at a live target that is shooting back. There just aint no way to practice that. Its something one is born with...the abilty to remain calm when TSHTF....the abilty to make it count when it counts.
“A former CNN reporter...”
First four words.
Black lives matter.
the headline is wrong. lynne was hiding while her husband, a former special forces officer, dealt with the would be robber.
He:
Chuck de Caro ... has worked as an investigative reporter for CNN and other news organizations.
She:
de Caro ... is married to former CNN Headline News anchor Lynne Russell ...
ahhh. missed that. thanks.
i stand corrected.
Read on...the perp was shot in the head. He was probably doped up, based on his erratic behavior, and looking for easy money to pay for his next hit.
From the 1980s, just like Sharyl Attkinsson.
Tense problems in the article.
Albuquerque will soon be # 1 on a list, murder capital of the Southwest, 4 in seven days. Glad the DOJ is here to teach APD to be nice and gentle people. Better have a conceal carry and be ready to use it, if not please get a "V" tattoed on your forehead, so the crooks can know the easy marks.
CNN ain’t what it used to be?
Love that tough talk!...LOL!
