As a 'damn Yankee' -- that is, a Northerner who came to the South and didn't leave -- the Confederate Flag has never really held meaning for me. I understood that for most who displayed it, it meant a reverence for the heritage of the South and expressed the rebellious spirit I so often find, and admire, here.
Then the events of the shooting in South Carolina played out. Dylann Root was found to have embraced that flag, but for different and objectionable reasons of true racism.
The hysteria that followed was terrifying to watch. Both Democrats and Republicans, media and corporations, all jumped aboard a fevered bandwagon that cast aside rationality for a false emotional response. Apple corporation, for example, banned all Civil War games in their app store. Utterly absurd.
The media breathlessly reported every banning, discontinuation, removal from state grounds, and whipped the masses up as well as they could.
The masses were unresponsive. I saw no turning of opinion, and there was no grassroots groundswell for this Southern cultural cleansing, this was a manufactured hysteria and the classic definition of overreaction, but it was at the organizational level. That, my friends, is censorship.
So the Confederate Flag now has a new meaning for this New York-born Southerner:
I was born and, for the most part, raised in the south. I never considered the confederate flag to be racist. I resent Governor Nicki and all the rest of the idiots who want the flag banned. The murders in S.C. were NOT caused by the confederate flag, but by the diseased monster who wanted to commit a horrendous mass murder.
“I keep writing and hope someone important notices me.”
I don’t know if I’m very important to anybody who is not related to me, but I’ve always noticed and appreciated your writings.
“It is hatred - - pure and simple of all things Southern.”
Yes, you are exactly right.
I also haven’t flown a flag daily since 2009. Next week I’ll fly the Stars & Bars on July 3rd and the Ft McHerny flag on the fourth. My neighbors would expect nothing less though some don’t know what the S&B’s represents. The same when I fly the Lone Star in March/April or the S&B’s on January 21st.
PING!
THAT is what it has ALWAYS stood for............
The flag is still flying in front of the Statehouse in SC.
In spite of Governor Nimrata Randhawa and the faggot Senator.
That flag flies because it is the will of the people of SC and their representatives.
It will NEVER come down.
Homosexuals and communists RAUS!!!!!
As a many generations Southerner, I gladly welcome all who believe in the Constitution and ‘We the people’ as honorary Southerners. We may still call you Yankees but you are our Yankees and we mean it in a teasing way.
This whole episode is showing people the real evil out there. I think now many of you all see what most of us in Dixie have been about all these years. We love this country. Our sons and daughters serve in a high percentage in the military. We never forget and we never give up.
I’m with you, Laz!
My flag is still The Stars And Stripes. But the CF is part of American history. Not the worlds history, ours. I don’t think it should be flying over government buildings, local, state or federal. That said I support entirely an individuals right or a groups to own one. It’s a free speech issue. If you can take away someones right to speech, such as this flag, then my rights and anyone else’s can be taken away. We should have a Confederate Flag Day on all points of the compass in this nation. And I’m a Yankee and I’m saying this.
Well said!
Taxman Bravo Zulu!
Because the left loathes the Rebel flag it does indeed make the perfect symbol of resistance to Tyranny.
There’s a stretch of highway not far from us in Apache Junction, AZ named after Jefferson Davis. Our new governor Doug Ducey (R) says he wants the state transportation dept. to consider renaming it. Ducey wants to see the highway named after Arizonans. Betcha someone will consider naming it after McCain. I want to vomit.
Also, there’s a beautiful place in Richmond, Va called Monument Avenue that has gorgeous statues of Confederate Generals. I wonder how long those will stay there?
Oh, and how about Beauvoir in Biloxi, MS?
These people will NEVER be satisfied.
"What are you rebelling against?"
"What do ya got........."
I am definitely a Yankee, but I have my Johnny Reb hat (with the flag on top). Got it in 1963 at Gettysburg. But ya know what? I have always suspected my father who has since past, to have been somewhat of a soothern sympathizah.
I love Gen. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B Stuart, Pickett, etc, etc
Here is my favorite Southern Belle and her confederate flag! :-)

“First they came for the Confederate Flag, and I did nothing because I wasnt a Southerner.”
Yesterday, the city council where I live, passed an ordinance that no e cigarette can be shown in public places or restaurants or shops. E cigarettes emit a bit of water vapor and it’s gone in one second - just water vapor. This ordinance was passed because they could, no other reason.
The Confederate Flag will come down because they can, no other reason.
The Supreme Court endorsed sodomy, made it the law of the land, because they could, no other reason.
You can assess reasons for doing these actions, but it really is just “because they can”.
I ordered another flag today, “An Appeal To Heaven”. It will be flying in our front yard - because we can.
Buuuump!
does anyone know where I can find a confederate flag overlay for my photos like that silly-assd rainbow flag thing?
jus' sayin'
