MALONE Richard Matt has been shot and killed near Malone, two sources have told The Buffalo News.
The sources said that a shootout occurred and that Matt was killed.
At least one of the two fugitives shot at a camper, which brought a quick response team to the area, the source told The News.
The FBI and other law enforcement were involved in the incident. No police were injured.
David Sweat is believed to be in a nearby wooded area, and a furious ground search is underway, one source told The News.
Sweat is believed to be armed. Canine units have a strong track on him, and a line of officers is slowly pushing through an area toward a road, a source told The News.
State routes 30 and 41 are the perimeters of the area, near the northern edge of Lake Titus.
Tweets from the Plattsburgh Press Republican said that several state trooper cars with lights flashing were headed west in Malone on Fayette Road at about 4 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
Oh, my gosh. If this is true, Im elated. Im relieved, said Gabe DiBernardo, the retired North Tonawanda Police detective chief who headed the investigation that led to Matts imprisonment for murder.
I have been worried for the public, for the police and for people here in the Buffalo area who have had trouble with Matt and have been threatened by him in the past. I have been worried that he would come back and do harm to people that testified against him. Ive been worried that some poor citizen would be hurt by this guy.
DiBernardo said he is watching developments closely and praying that no police officers were hurt in the confrontation with Matt.

That’s a great plan. Hope it works.
But they wanted the NY guys to ‘get’ them and improve their white hits number.
I would add something....If under appeal...it can run no longer than years. And there can be no reprieve.
Bet the b**** said that’s where they would head.
Are you suggesting there’s a moose in them thar woods?
I don't know about letting them escape, but I figured from the beginning they weren't going to let them back alive. Not that they have shoot to kill orders, but let's just say they all... fear for their lives... enough to take every... precaution...
She's probably keeping her fingers crossed that they both wind up dead and unable to testify.
If I am not mistaken, Malone was the site of the trial of famous gangster Louis Lepke.
“So, obviously, Jesus aint with him.”
No, according to some here, He’s over in California presiding over the draught on us heathens that live here!
He [Richard Matt] killed a 76-year-old businessman by breaking his neck, then cut up the body and threw the pieces into a river.
(snip)
The victim was a food broker named William Rickerson who had hired and then fired Matt.

On Dec. 4, 1997, according to the trial testimony of an accomplice, Matt beat Rickerson with a knife sharpener, bound him with duct tape, tossed him in the trunk of a car, and then drove around for 27 hours looking for a place to kill and bury him.
At one stop on the drive, Matt opened the trunk, broke four of Rickerson's fingers, hit him in the chest with a steering wheel locking device, then shut the trunk and kept driving.
The accomplice testified that Matt had him turn down a cul-de-sac, stop the car and open the trunk again. He said Matt told him: "You know, I've had enough of this."
He said Matt reached in and twisted Rickerson's head. "I heard a pop," the accomplice testified, and the businessman "just dropped back in the trunk." Matt cut off the arms and legs with a hacksaw, authorities said.
A fisherman discovered the torso in the Niagara River.
“Lesson to escapees. Don’t be lazy...run fast and hard.”
One of the best escapes in the last 50 years. Followed by the dumbest moves ever.
You’re by Canada. Into Canada, across the country, down into Washington, continue south till Mexico. If you are careful, five, six days to get back to the US. No one is looking for you on the west coast.
Great Plan !
I just have to figure a way to get some Hard time in the hoosecow !
Up there, there might be.
;D
I've never been in prison, and yet even I know that the first thing a pair of escaped prisoners should do after getting out of prison is to split up.
Looks like Law Enforcement Senior Skip Day...
