DETROIT (WDIV) -- The Detroit fire commissioner has fired an EMT who refused to help a baby when she was just minutes away from the home.
Commissioner Edsel Jenkins said Ann Marie Thomas's employment with the Detroit Fire Department has been terminated.
"Today, we conducted an appeals hearing, which Ms. Thomas requested. After reviewing all of the facts of this incident, I have determined that the appropriate course of action is to terminate Ms. Thomas' employment with the Detroit Fire Department effective immediately," said Jenkins in a statement released Wednesday.
A frantic supervisor ordered the veteran medic to get to the house where a baby was not breathing and her mother was calling for help. Thomas was just around the corner on her pervious run a few streets east. She refused to respond to the scene.

The Baby died the next day. So it is indeed a money quote the parents will get lots of money based on her stupid words.
It is Detroit; Henry Ford wouldn’t know the place any more.
on her “pervious” run......
Do they even try any more?
Very upsetting story...
Thanks cripplecreek. D*** that 'white privilege'. /s
I know the police chief has said he would like to see cases of 911 dispatchers charged criminally for this sort of thing but I’m not sure there is any legal recourse.
This is what affirmative action brings.
She should be fired, fined and jailed.
Sick.
She shouldn’t only be terminated... she belongs in jail.
My first impression is to think this EMT should never have been one.
I’m do wonder what she means by, “You know how these family’s react”.
It doesn’t make sense she wouldn’t go in. Are we not hearing the rest of the story?
A NATIONAL STORY!!
NBC, CBS, POTUS Obama, ABC, et al.....
We have a BIG problem in this country...!!!!!
I don't think he'd recognize the whole country anymore, either.
Yeah I think that ship sailed when SCOTUS ruled the Cops had no obligation whatsoever to protect citizens from harm.
“I’m not about to be on no scene......”
Who talks like that?......Never mind.
agreed.
if a doctor can face charges for malpractice, why shouldn’t an EMT if their actions, or lack thereof, caused the death of a person.
negligent homicide?
I work in an urban EMS operation in a blue state and there is no affirmative action hiring here. Maybe Detroit is different but if she’s a paramedic she’d have to pass some tough writtens and practicals no matter what. Unfortunately there is no morality test that can weed out mutants ... terrible story.
I’m sure her Union will be all over this case. Thomas will likely be back on the job with full back pay in no time.
Reminds me of the oh-so-true skit SNL did about the union awards. “He on breaaak.”
A similar thing happened in DC. A guy collapsed in front of a firehouse, a rookie went to perform CPR but was ordered back into the firehouse by his supervisor because an official call about the guy hadn’t come in yet. The supervisor ended up taking early retirement.
