Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just dont know us, the Rev. Norvel Goff told the packed, multiracial congregation of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday.
It was the first service since the horrific slaughter of nine innocent souls by a racist fanatic.
Not being a Christian, I can only marvel at the dignity and courage of the victims relatives who forgave the shooter. If I could ever manage such a thing, it would probably take me decades. It took them little more than a day.
Less shocking, but almost as uplifting, was the conduct of the broader Charleston community, which has been unified and dignified, despite the expectations of some in the media and the accused gunman, whod singled out Charleston because of its success at racial integration.
And this points to Goff being right, not just about Charleston but about the South in general.
There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation than Dixie.

Yes, I can defend it. Suppressing the urge to be honestly nasty to others is a social virtue. Not having the urge to be nasty to others is a personal virtue. (The virtue of humility, to be precise). The latter is morally superior to the former, but the former is extremely beneficially if one is interested in a pleasant social environment.
You have to wonder about people who consider an abundance of churches to be a bad thing.
“any statement starting with You people ... has to be suspect.”
Yeah, say YOU PEOPLE to a group of blacks and see what happens.
Yes, but yours sounds vulgar. You’re from the north aren’t you? Or perhaps a globalist?
“They use blacks to get what they want. They dont give a damn about them.”
Very true. If that little secret ever gets out.....OH BOY!
AMEN!
“social virtue”
See, that’s where ya screwed up right there. No yankee is gonna have an inkling of what the heck that means. :)
You put it so well. Thank you.
You can be honest and polite at the same time. Takes practice and is best taught during childhood. You can also teach an old Yankee knew tricks. Just takes a little longer because of the amount of knowledge already accumulated as opposed to a blank slate. I was born in the Bronx, grew up in suburbs of Philly, moved around a lot, Il, VT, NJ, south MO, NC.
I personally prefer living in places where people believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and know that after loving God with all your heart, you are to love your neighbor as yourself. If you need to learn to be polite, best place to start is with the person in the mirror, eh? Have a blessed day!
You have to wonder about people who think "the North" doesn't have an abundance of churches ...
The South is certainly prejudiced against Yankees in general—and yet they relocate down your way all the time.
Charleston is called the Holy City by many; its many churches are indeed cherished. Its "Four Corners of Law" are signposts and true reminders of its history and courage.
Of course, it is also recognized that the Ashley and Copper rivers merge at Charleston to form the Atlantic Ocean; and here Senator Rivers placed his Naval Base (now closed).
Over seventy years ago now author W. J. Cash published The Mind of the South which makes several cogent points. One is that "being Southern" is more an attitude/mindset of independence and fellowship and not the very common and misused regional identifier. Two, in the Low Country from the times of indigo and rice, sand-lappers went from dirt floors to views from the Battery living SOB in just two generations.
Perhaps it is paradoxical, the grieving AME church faces Calhoun Street and is very near Marion Square (formerly the parade ground for the Military College of South Carolina) where there is a towering memorial to one John C(aldwell). Calhoun.
Perhaps another paradox in waiting - Will the POTUS be bringing in his entourage the Rev. Wright to the AME services?
Damn right they don’t know us. The only ones who are starting trouble (TRYING to start trouble) are from out of town. The rest of us band together, put our heads down and move on.
The cop who murdered the black man, his family came out almost immediately at the news Sharpton was on his way down here, in a press conference told him to stay away and stated their support for the Charleston PD.
For those who don’t know, we lost 9 firefighters in a furniture store almost to the date 6 or 7 yrs ago. It is the same as this mass murder. We support each other. We don’t fall apart and start blaming each other.
That is unique to us in the Charleston area that no lib or “journalist” will ever understand.
This whole flag ordeal is white noise. Pandering at it’s peak.
Bingo.
That being said, there seems to be a lot of the prosperity gospel in the South.
Both are heresy.
Well, if we forget this part of our history we forget about the causes of the civil war as well. One of them was slavery (but not the only one). So let's forget about slavery. Never happened. Now when someone talks about the legacy of slavery we can say, "What slavery? That never happened!"
The left has used this tactic in trying to say that the American life and culture of the 50s and early 60s never existed, so we should stop trying to go back to something that never happened. We simply apply the same tactics to them.
The point is not whether you or I agree with their teaching.
The point is that they exist.
That’s just it, no?
Slavery and the race card...make the history disappear or greatly diminish it...what do they gain? Why? It takes away from their meme.
Once I was listening to a woman from Ohio rant about how “You Southerners are all so racist” bla, bla, bla. When she finally stopped to take a breath, my brain cells actually worked and dredged up two words to say to her: Marge Shott. Boy, did that shut her up.
