Virginia will begin the process to remove the Confederate flag from state-issued license plates, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Tuesday, calling the emblem divisive and hurtful.
McAuliffe said that a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling allows states to decide which emblems to allow or not allow on license plates. He said that the decision supersedes previous federal court rulings that required Virginia to issue Sons of the Confederate Veterans plates that include the iconic image of the red flag with a blue X.
His announcement comes a day after South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the states capitol in Columbia.
As Gov. Haley said yesterday, her state can ill afford to let this symbol continue to divide the people of South Carolina. I believe the same is true here in Virginia, McAuliffe said in a statement. Even its display on state issued license tags is, in my view, unnecessarily divisive and hurtful to too many of our people.
Virginia does not fly the flag of the former confederacy at its state capitol in Richmond, once the capital of the South. But in 1999, the General Assembly allowed the specialty license plates for the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Although the legislation attempted to preclude the flag from being displayed on these plates, court rulings forced the state to allow a depiction of the banner.
McAuliffe says that hes directed state transportation officials to devise a plan to replace these plates as quickly as possible.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Texas refusal to issue a license plate displaying the flag and rejected a free-speech challenge. The court found that Texas can limit the content of plates because they are state property.

So did Haley. The Confederacy goes into the memory hole. Soon, speaking of it will be a “hate crime.”
For quite awhile now, i've been noticing frightening similarities between 1930s Germany, and Obama's America, up to and including an irrational infatuation with race.
They are trying to turn people they hate into the new Jews.
The Left and their eager fellow travelers in the GOP.
So, now that we have established that there was no Confederacy, how are we to believe that slavery ever existed in our country?
Never happen. Not one single Democrat or Democrat candidate will be asked a single question concerning the flag. The media intend to and will hang this in its entirety around the necks of the Republicans.
Agree.
I’m not suggesting anything, but the speed at which the left grabbed ahold of this tragedy and got their way with it without much meaningful resistance is why people think these things are planned.
White boy kills blacks in cold blood. White boy has a history of ‘racist’ remarks and desires revenge for so many blacks killing whites. Happens in a state that 0bama needs to take a hard turn left. A willing media and a compromising Governor.
How all convenient.
Or, all this was pure happenstance and the left was just quick on the draw.
You are not grasping the meaning and effect of the program of Gleichschaltung they are in the process of implementing. There are people who are persuaded to go along simply because the herd goes that direction.
It snowballs, and conformity to liberal orthodoxy is imposed.
That being said, if they remove the Confederate flag from the public arena because some people find it offensive, then they ought to do the same for Islamic symbols which even more people find offensive and has far more recent victims.
No matter what they do, it won’t stop black rage. There is no appeasing them.
... Especially that flag is so strongly associated with the Ku Klux Klan, a group formed by ex-Confederate Army officers...
Ironically, that flag, a symbol of both groups consisting of Southern Democrats.
The left are already looking for new targets.
SCOTUS says otherwise.
There are a great many indications that Obama has been employing the Hitler "play book." (And, if you understand Leftist tactics, it makes a lot of sense, why they would employ that formula in America, rather than the Bolshevik. The Nazi revolution, after all, was also directed at a largely "middle class" population--as opposed to the largely peasant population in 1917 Russia.)
Guns don’t kill people, Flags kill people.
Remember - they are keeping us safe!
/sarcasm
How did it happen that we are no longer the home of the brave - we seem to be the home of ‘being afraid of everything and begging the government to protect us.’
Note to government I really DON’T need or want you to protect me.
a) You do a crap job of it.
b) The cost of your protection makes mafia protection look cheap.
Now - if it come to and actual, real invasion of this country - ie. actual troop ships, actual enemy aircraft carriers etc. we can have that talk then (and I’ll join up with my fellow armed Americans and fight to the death). But until then, but out of my life. Sell your security to the cowards that need it.
What is left out of these discussions is the fact that Liberal Democrats are deciding what the nation is going to talk about because *THEY* control the airwaves. They use their control to push propaganda that enacts their agenda.
They have made the story about this boy's murdering of innocents into a vehicle by which they can espouse their hatred for things they don't like. All other aspects of this story have been subsumed by their preferred narrative.
In a grown up world, or a world where the media isn't completely controlled by Liberal Democrats, this would not be the prime topic being discussed.
But they have the power to hold up other news and force a conversation on their pet issues.
They need to lose this power, or we will all lose our freedom and some of us our lives.
Gee, a Democrat following the lead of a Republican. Never thought I’d see the day. Maybe his next step will be to march on Hollywood.Cemetary and tear down the pyramid built as a memorial to Confederate soldiers. On a more serious note, Virginia was a battleground state and suffered greatly during and after the Civil War. Native Virginians have a vested history in this conflict and some wounds persist to this day. Facing invasion from the North after asking only to be left alone, Virginians stood against the Union. We are seeing a parallel now in that some states are trying to stand against the policies of immorality, fiscal irresponsibility, and negligence to perform duties being forced upon states or performed by the federal government. Perhaps the banning of these symbols of past resistance are an attempt to remove history of organized rebellion to unjust actions.
