Why Nikki Haley is smart to want to remove South Carolina’s Confederate flag

During a press conference on Monday, Gov. Nikki Haley will ask that the Confederate flag on the grounds of South Carolina's capitol be removed, according to the Post and Courier. The move from the popular governor (reelected last year by 15 points and with 79 percent approval last April) will almost certainly help encourage the state legislature to vote for removal. As it stands, the legislature needs a two-thirds vote to make that happen -- a high bar.

Founders of the KKK? Yes, and it was founded for a noble cause, to protect women and children from maurauding gangs during Reconstruction, when each and every Southern State was controlled by the Federal Army, and Southerners had no rights whatsover(sic).

Baloney. The KKK was formed to keep newly emancipated blacks in line.

That is how I feel.

That is too bad because the Country is not unified but they are doing their damnedest to unify us under the Hammer and Sickle.

There is no practical method to break up the United States without causing unmitigated financial and military disaster. So, we must keep this grand experiment (first democracy in world) going as long as possible. I do not like the direction the country is going as well. I have some hope the people will wake up on day. We got Reagan after Carter. May be we will get a knight in shining armor after Obama.

Their country was invaded by Federal forces to bring them back into the mold because of monetary reasons and nothing else.
----------------------

And yet slavery was not forbidden in the Confederate Constitution. In fact it said about slavery- No slave or other person held to service or labor in any State or Territory of the Confederate States, under the laws thereof, escaping or lawfully carried into another, shall, in consequence of any law or regulation therein, be discharged from such service or labor; but shall be delivered up on claim of the party to whom such slave belongs,. or to whom such service or labor may be due.

Never mind that. The South was only fighting for monetary reasons./s

Gee Wolly if good ole Father Abraham Lincoln was so dead against slavery why did he allow the border states to keep there slaves? Also why did he allow the Western part of Virginia to illegally leave Virginia?

Lincoln’s extended family owned slaves. He was from Kentucky.

Yes, I’m sure that they have - in their own minds. But here in the real world things are a bit different. The southron mythology had a good run but it’s wearing a little thin.

BTW: Who or what is this 4cj?

The traders did not go out to capture slaves, they were sold by their own people.
Slavery, goes on today and is abhorrent. It has never been solely a “black” v’s “white” affair, regardless of what Uncle Sam says and it has always had varying degrees of legality. Take for instance the “company store” or “Bondage” when men sold themselves and their labour for years to feed their wives and children. It went on all over the world, regardless of the color of your skin. Look up working for FIAT in Turin.
I read once of an Englishman’s 1800’s report on slavery in the southern states. He said that slaves were regarded as livestock, they were assets with a commercial value, fed, sheltered and cared for, just like any other stock, they were selected for breeding just like horses or cattle. Indeed there were many cases of ignorant brutality, just as today you will find a fool, ill-treating an animal because it doesn’t perform to expectations.
However, his conclusions were, that the American negro slave was better off than the so called British free man who was bound to his employer, mill owner or mine owner, who couldn’t care less about his employees or their families. No demand for coal, no demand for cotton, close it down. Wait till the market improves. Who cares if they are starving? Break a leg down the mine or an arm in the mill? Tough shit, you and your family are out on the street or in the workhouse.(see Dickens).
Why did the British folk never revolt against the monarchy, the establishment, like the Americans, the French, the Germans, the Russians, et. al.? You may well ask. The answer is that they did but that they did only in localized pockets, no national organization. The British army, very quickly and brutally put an end to any sort of civil unrest, even into Glasgow in 1919. You won’t find that in the history books. Dig deep! The poor people suffered under the ingrained servitude of the Norman conquest, forelock-tugging and “British is best”.

YOU are caught up in your morbid overview that the War of Northern Aggression was totally about slaves. I would call that the liberal “mythology.”

Amen to the Texas flag not going away! And the various Confederate flags too for that matter.

rustbucket, seventh generation Texan with seven direct Confederate soldier ancestors (sort of like the seventh son of the seventh son born with special powers)

Hardly. When you persist in judging men from the 19th century by 21st century standards of racism then there isn't anyone from the period that comes off looking well.

Who or what is this 4cj?

4cj was a former Georgia legislator who initially posted as 4ConservativeJustices, then later shortened his handle to 4cj. He was a thorough, knowledgeable researcher. Years ago he stopped posting. I have wondered whether he was very ill or had passed away. I'm sorry he is no longer posting here.

Here is a link to one of his posts that addressed Lincoln's racism: Link

Years ago I made a post pointing out that Lincoln used the n-word in one of his speeches and that one of the current-day Lincoln societies had changed the word to Negro in their version of his speech. In my opinion, that's worse than "judging men from the 19th century by 21st century standards of racism."

May be we will get a knight in shining armor after Obama.

If there is an after Obama.

The only thing required is for Governors to actually recognize they are Governors of Sovereign States. I guess Ike scared the bejesus out of them in Little Rock.

When George Wallace stepped aside for a federal marshal I knew the 10th amendment was truly dead. The Government picked the perfect issue to forever put Governors in their inferior place.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us. But I still maintain that if you judge any Southerner of that period by the same standards of racism that you judge Lincoln by then they'll appear just as bad as he in that department, if not worse.
