Why Nikki Haley is smart to want to remove South Carolina’s Confederate flag

During a press conference on Monday, Gov. Nikki Haley will ask that the Confederate flag on the grounds of South Carolina's capitol be removed, according to the Post and Courier. The move from the popular governor (reelected last year by 15 points and with 79 percent approval last April) will almost certainly help encourage the state legislature to vote for removal. As it stands, the legislature needs a two-thirds vote to make that happen -- a high bar.

Real slow .... you and I were discussing the confederate flag. Remember ... you were emphatic that if Gov Haley took down this flag ... you would lose your 1st amendment rights? Remember?

But if you want to talk about that awful war, please be advised that South Carolina specifically referenced their right to own slaves. Hey ... if you want to block out that aspect ... perhaps you could enlighten me how seceding from the United States is not tantamount to declaring you have no desire to be an American? Perhaps there is another country out there that would allow you to immigrate? A country that would allow you to fly your freak flag? Perchance allow you to own slaves?

Real Slow! According to the Constitution I have the right to own and display that flag if I so desire! Secondly, you are having a lot of trouble keeping 1861 separated from 2015. I would suggest you learn something before you stick your ignorant nose into what you know nothing about!

Nikki Haley has been a good Governor for South Carolina.

I guess she is done with politics and will make a bitch of a housewife.

Leave history alone. To deny it is very cowardice.

We are dealing with political cowards.

The democrats of the 19th Century were states rights, pro-family, pro-2nd amendments, pro-God. The democrat party of the 19th Century absolutely can not be compared to the democrats of the last 50 years or so. In the second half of the 20th century the roles of the GOP and democrats have completely reversed.

The democrat party of the 19th century was also pro-slavery, founders of the KKK and were willing to leave the Union to write their own Constitution.

Lets not leave all of history out from the Democrat party

WRONG! In 1859 the south was flush with cash. Well, the slavers were at any rate. The rank~n~file were scratching out an existence per usual. But there was no fear of bankruptcy - none. And it was more a matter of them telling everyone else how to live their lives and insisting that the free states enforce the subjugation of slaves at a time when they were shedding themselves of the Peculiar Institution.

Slavery was a dying institution and would have died out.

Not the way the confeds reworked their pretend constitution. They immortalized the Peculiar Institution.

The Confederate Constitution specifically said NO MORE SLAVES WOULD BE IMPORTED.

They didn't have to because black populations were (and had been) self-sustaining for several generations.

Lincoln didn’t give a rat’s ass about slaves and said it in his official papers many times.

So what? He didn't set out to free the slaves - he set out to defend the union.

England was also getting ready to side with the Confederacy and he knew if he made the war about slavery and the “rights of man” England would not offer support to the South.

Baloney, the Brits might cozy up so as to make their acquisition of the south easier but they were NEVER going to formally recognize the rebels.

The Old Glory meaning stars and stripes for ever, should fly on government buildings.

IMO saying the Confederate flag is an important part of your heritage implies wishing the south had successfully seceded from the Union and not wanting to be a US citizen....

but this whole southern way of life argument ... as it relates to the Confederate era ... seems archaic.

I didn't say the flag is an important part of our heritage; I said that what the flag STANDS FOR to us is our heritage. Perhaps that is a difficult distinction to grasp, especially to those who don't share an appreciation for our heritage. To say that equates to "not wanting to be a US citizen" implies that you consider the antebellum south as something less than legitimate USA status. It is not a desire that the South had won, or that the US had become split into two countries. Instead, it's more of an agrucultural/rural vs industrial/urban attitude and a preference for local/state sovereignty vs command and direction from DC and the northeastern political bosses

It is not a yearning to return to an era of stage coaches and muzzle-loading single shot firearms or slavery and chattel, but it is a desire for a return to a Constitutional Republic. Perhaps that seems archaic to you, but Washington DC - largely at the behest of the democrats and to some extent northeastern establishment republicans - has abused the states way beyond the offenses of the crown as outlined by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence.

I think one flag is enough, because it signifies a unified country. Divided countries have lot of unnecessary turmoil.
The old glory is a symbol of UNITED States.

If a state wants to fly their individual flag on a state building, it should have a secondary status. Such as inside the building or on a lower level. All federal buildings which includes post offices should only display the national flag.

That is how I feel.

“The democrat party of the 19th century was also pro-slavery, founders of the KKK and were willing to leave the Union to write their own Constitution”.

Pro-slavery? Yes, and so was every one of the original 13 colonies.

Founders of the KKK? Yes, and it was founded for a noble cause, to protect women and children from maurauding gangs during Reconstruction, when each and every Southern State was controlled by the Federal Army, and Southerners had no rights whatsover.

Yes, every Founding Father believed in the right of secession if a state so desired. They desired and they left. Their country was invaded by Federal forces to bring them back into the mold because of monetary reasons and nothing else.

Lincoln was a racist of the first degree and cared not a wit about a black slave and said it many times. He was a two-bit railroad lawyer installed by Northern industrialists to do their bidding.

But he got over it and hooked up with the abolitionists. (Republicans)

He was a two-bit railroad lawyer installed by Northern industrialists to do their bidding.

Well, the Underground Railroad.

Happy Juneteenth!

Here is the solution: - let's simply replace all 50 state flags with this:

Well, 49 of the 50 state flags. This proud flag will not go away:
