Presidential candidate Ben Carson is challenging his Republican rivals to link last week's attack on a historically black church to racism.
Not everything is about race in this country. But when it is about race, then it just is," Carson wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Monday.
"So when a guy who has been depicted wearing a jacket featuring an apartheid-era Rhodesian flag walks into a historic black church and guns down nine African-American worshipers at a Bible study meeting, common sense leads one to believe his motivations are based in racism."
Carson, the only black candidate running for the White House in 2016, compared the reluctance by some to label the shooting that killed nine black congregants racism to doctors refusing to "make the diagnosis for fear of offending the patient." His column links to video and articles about Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush hedging on the shooter's motives.
Twenty-one year old Dylann Roof has been charged in the murders and reportedly told police that he wanted to start a race war.
"There are people who are claiming that they can lead this country who dare not call this tragedy an act of racism, a hate crime, for fear of offending a particular segment of the electorate," Carson said.
"I understand the sensitivities. To some, calling the events in Charleston, S.C., a hate crime reinforces a stigma, which they have fought hard to put behind them. But refusing to call it what it is racism is a far more dangerous proposition."

Is this African American going to call out all acts of racism, i.e the rampant racism in the black community, or just those that are politically correct?
Is he wrong about this incident?
Yet what do these very same goofs tell us to think about muslims?
The media and democrats are scared sh*tless that after 8 years of America's First African American President, blacks will see little reason to vote in 2016. When that happens, goodbye democrat party.
THAT is what all of this rabble rousing is about.
So what if a few eggs get broken in the process? Its how progressive statists roll.
My pleasure.
I don’t see it that way, but YMMV.
Murder is an act, racism is a POV. A totally deranged person has a totally deranged POV. It is absurd to assign rationality to an insane person.
Buchanan made a strong showing in New Hampshire, ca 1992,scaring the Hell out of Bush I.
Even if Bernie wins there, it will be a flash in the pan.
Nice try. A POV can be irrational as you admit. Racism is certainly fundamentally that. People tie worth and ability to race. Not rational. You make it sound like racism is a rational POV. There is no need to assign rationality to the guy before you can call it racism.
Obsession or depression or many other mental illnesses could be called point-of-views. They are not acts, though they can lead to acts. Everything starts in the mind before it becomes an act. Crazy and crime are often intertwined with perverse reasoning. Certainly they are not mutually exclusive. It is not essential to discover which came first (chicken vs. egg argument) to label it what it is.
Why do you NEED for it to not be racism?
Maybe I am behind the times, but what does YMMV mean?
Surprise, another GOPer showing us he cannot resist being led by commie propaganda.
Even using the famous STRAWMAN.
Well said.
Is there a candidate who is saying the shooter isn’t a racist? Why in heaven’s name would anyone defend this guy? Yes, he’s a nut but he’s a racist nut.
Your Mileage May Vary, i.e. you may have a different result, your experience may be different.
He’s a doctor, he must know this was an act of madness, mental illness.
I don't believe most become corrupt once they get to DC, it's my opinion they've
hidden their true selves as psychopaths, and very well, until they stop fearing
being found out because of the power that the Feds control over the populations.
Some can control their inner evils by seeing those intentions as destructive
to other people. I call that integrity and is very rarely exercised by most in office.
I have customers who recognize my integrity but if I were to enter their
domain (workplace) they would most certainly do everything possible to destroy
that which threatens them and their lack of conscience. The mind of adolescent
minded adult Democrats. These people exist in just about every workplace.
Agreed.
Why do you NEED for it to not be racism?
I don't but I do prefer to see reality. We're not talking about someone who is simply depressed or obsessed he is totally unhinged from reality.
Even if you are a psychologist, which I doubt, you have not examined your patient so you cannot claim to hold the reality position against any other internet poster (passenger seat driver types). Even if you had examined your patient, you have not proved that someone cannot be unhinged from reality and a racist at the same time. We do not know whether or not he is unhinged from reality. We have quite a bit of evidence that he is a racist. My position was that being a racist is a sort of detachment from reality in and of itself.
Checkmate.
