Presidential candidate Ben Carson is challenging his Republican rivals to link last week's attack on a historically black church to racism.
Not everything is about race in this country. But when it is about race, then it just is," Carson wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Monday.
"So when a guy who has been depicted wearing a jacket featuring an apartheid-era Rhodesian flag walks into a historic black church and guns down nine African-American worshipers at a Bible study meeting, common sense leads one to believe his motivations are based in racism."
Carson, the only black candidate running for the White House in 2016, compared the reluctance by some to label the shooting that killed nine black congregants racism to doctors refusing to "make the diagnosis for fear of offending the patient." His column links to video and articles about Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush hedging on the shooter's motives.
Twenty-one year old Dylann Roof has been charged in the murders and reportedly told police that he wanted to start a race war.
"There are people who are claiming that they can lead this country who dare not call this tragedy an act of racism, a hate crime, for fear of offending a particular segment of the electorate," Carson said.
"I understand the sensitivities. To some, calling the events in Charleston, S.C., a hate crime reinforces a stigma, which they have fought hard to put behind them. But refusing to call it what it is racism is a far more dangerous proposition."

Lindsey Graham: America Has A Long Way To Go On Race Relations

Well, it was racism on the part of a drug addled lunatic.
Don’t see how it applies to “all white people” any more than the outrageous violent crime rate among blacks applies to “all black people.”
If not, then FUBC.
Well duh. Ben’s twisting words here...and revealing he is not ready for Prime Time.
No one I know about is not calling it racism. They are just saying it isn’t an indictment on white people in general like the libs want to claim. It is one punk creep loser who decided to get attention this way. I’m guessing it had more to do with his reaction to recent news events than with any racist upbringing (per a black young man who used to be his friend). Or some other event that led him down this path.
Shame on Carson for using this. He is no better than Obama for trying to squeeze political advantage out of it
Do we really want to even consider another black enabler in the WH?
Guy is an evil lunatic.
Drop him a fishing hole, filled with pirhana...
Mentally ill people often find “causes” that confirm their inner turmoil and anger. Oddly enough, he complained that he couldn’t find any racist organizations in SC to join!
yes because he is simply brilliant
Can someone tell me what R candidate has denied there was racism involved?
Carson’s about to open up a big ol’ can of whoop-butt on his very own straw man!
Are you serious?
(a doctor, of all people, should want to investigate the role legal mind-altering pharmaceuticals had on the killer's state of mind)
Dr Carson lost me at his support of pick and choose gun control.
Yes, it was about racism - THIS KID WAS A RACIST... not every white American
why is it when muzzies murder we are told not to blame all muzzies-
but when a white kid does it, its all white peoples’ fault?
Carsons about to open up a big ol can of whoop-butt on his very own straw man!
LOL!
Ben Carson didn’t apply it to “all white people.”
Over used and abused term, and now it means nothing so I don't
give a shit anymore about it.
I guess it was a matter of time Ben Carson used his race as a political tool.
His color gives him status to decide who is racist whether real or invented.
Great point
I’d get more exercised about it if the disproportionate rates of black-on-white crime, especially the absolutely one-sided rates of the crime of rape, got at least a fraction of the attention (and Ben Carson could put his money where his mouth is on this, if he really wanted things to be fair and just). There is indeed a cold racial war occurring already, hot in spots, and the hot spots are almost overwhelmingly black-on-white, and they’re daily, guerilla warfare.
When supporters of the families of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome-the white teens who were tortured, raped, and finally murdered-were booed down as racists, as Nazis, etc, merely for supporting the white families of two young white victims of a horrendous black-on-white crime-the animals sat eating breakfast as Channon lay dying a few feet away, and one of the animals was another female-I knew I’d never feel the same again about the so-called “war on blacks”.
How is he twisting words? It seems to me that his words -— the ones quote in this article -— are measured and accurate.
