We are not allowed, needless to say, to disclose our top secret list ranking the GOP presidential candidates from top to bottom. Its kept in encrypted form on a password-protected, self-destructing hard drive in a safe room at The Weekly Standard, accessible only to a trusted few who are cleared to know all the machinations we are planning to engage in to secure a 2016 Republican nominee to our liking. But we can reveal this: Donald Trump competes for last place on our list with Rand Paul. We dont think either man should be the next president of the United States.
So were not Trump enthusiasts. Were not even Trump fellow travelers. Were closer to Trump deriders. But we do remember 1992. Ross Perot was, as a presidential candidate, something of an oddball and egomaniac. The George H. W. Bush campaign mocked and dismissed him. Bush might have been reelected if the campaign had instead taken the attitude that there are things to be learned from smart oddballs and eccentric egomaniacs who have a feel for public opinion.
What might we learn from listening to Trump?
Trump understands that Americans aspire to greatness. His campaign slogan is Make America Great Again. Sound familiar? A prominent Ronald Reagan slogan in 1980 was Lets Make America Great Again. In his announcement speech Trump repeated several timesand repetition may not be as foolish in politics as all the pundits who disapproved of Trumps verbosity thinkthat we are going to make our country great again. And he concluded his remarks, Sadly, the American dream is dead. But if I get elected president I will bring it back bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and we will make America great again. Politics is about dreams as much as it is about deliverables, about pride as much as its about pocketbooks. Trump understands that. Its not clear most of the rest of the field does.
Trump understands that Americans like winning: Our country is in serious trouble. We dont have victories anymore. We used to have victories, but we dont have them. Trump is aware the public believes international politics is more zero-sum than globalist elites like to think. Our enemies are getting stronger and stronger, by the way, and we as a country are getting weaker. So Trump is pro-tough-trade-negotiations, hes pro-China-bashing, and hes pro-military. I will find within our military, I will find the General Patton or I will find General MacArthur, I will find the right guy. I will find the guy thats going to take that military and make it really work. Nobody, nobody will be pushing us around. A bit simple-minded? Sure. Closer to the truth than the cocktail partiers at Davos? Probably. Closer in sentiment to the American people? Certainly. Trump understands that many Americans believe winning isnt everything, but its a good thing. A very good thing. Its not clear most of the rest of the field does.
Trump understands the centrality of Obamacare on the domestic front. We have a disaster called the big lie: Obama-care. Obamacare kicks in in 2016. Really big league. It is going to be amazingly destructive. Doctors are quitting. And so Trump understands that its important to emphasize that Obamacare must be repealed and replaced. Its not clear most of the rest of the field does.
Trump understands that, in running for president, it is a major disadvantage to never have been elected to anything. But hes a turn-lemons-into-lemonade type guy. So he goes after politicians. Ive watched the politicians. Ive dealt with them all my life. If you cant make a good deal with a politician, then theres something wrong with you. Youre certainly not very good. And thats what we have representing us. They will never make America great again. Trump understands that Americans have deep doubts about the competence and probity of our political class. Its not clear most of the rest of the field does.
Trump understands that Republican primary voters dont want a nominee who will shy away from criticism of President Obama. Our president doesnt have a clue. Hes a bad negotiator. Hes the one that did Bergdahl. We get Bergdahl, they get five killer terrorists. . . . We get Bergdahl. We get a traitor, a no-good traitor, and they get the five people that they wanted for years, and those people are now back on the battlefield trying to kill us. Trump understands that its okay to say something the media elite will shake their collective head at. Its not clear most of the rest of the field does.
We trust Trump will not be the Republican nominee. But Trump could win significant support from Perot-type voters in primaries who will then be up for grabs in the general election. Bill Clinton has already begun sweet-talking him: Trump has been . . . uncommonly nice to Hillary and me. Republicans need not compete with the master in flattering Trump. But imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. A little touch of Trump in the rhetoric, the attitude, the bearing of the other Republican candidates could go a long way toward making this election more like 1980 than 1992.
“We trust Trump will not be the Republican nominee. We trust Trump will not be the Republican nominee.”

For someone not destined to be the party nominee, he sure is generating a lot of opposition media attention.
Just saying...
(oops, sorry for the duplicate text)
Republicans want to go along to get along.
Trump will shake things up and tell us the truth (at least his truth) and expose some of the crap we get from Republicans.
It will be very interesting and Kristol will make money off the discussions.
Trump should name names for his cabinet positions and compare their creds to the current clowns. Then, they could get out there and campaign with/for him. The same ole same ole politicos have got to go. They’re running the republic into the ground.
(I’m not a big fan of Donald but ANY outsider is superior the SCUMBAGS we have now)
Kristol and the other members of the MSM want Trump to run as a third party candidate, thus giving it to Hillary.
I hope he thinks of America first and doesn’t run as an independent. I like some of what he said.
People are forgetting the MANY things Ted has said that drove the media insane. He is not afraid to say these things, just like Trump.
But he is intellectually superior and doesn’t have the dozens of quotes against republican principals in the past that Trump does.
Well, according to Kristol, Trump seems to understand more about the American people and this election than any of the other Republican candidates. And he hopes some other candidate will adopt a little Trump understanding and plain talk.
Quite a compliment in a roundabout sort of way.
He didn’t say “any other” he said “Its not clear most of the rest of the field does.” That isn’t the same thing, is it?
So which of the other candidates does that sentence exclude???
You tell us.
Everyone knows Bill Kristol and The Weekly Standard are supportive of everything the Bush clan is offering.
For someone not destined to be the party nominee, he sure is generating a lot of opposition media attention.”
Yeah, I just imagine that there are any number of the potential nominees who are crapping in their drawers and burning the midnight oil trying to figure out how to deal with Trump. If he does nothing more than force the rest to take positions, he will have performed an invaluable service.
He should, he is a cheesy, media created celebrity, famous for being famous.
Lol, thanks for the concession.
Kristol wrote a column and established certain assumptions or beliefs he has about Trump as compared to ALL the other candidates. He established the assumptions one-by-on, then drew his conclusion that applied to all the other candidates.
Obviously, he did not exclude any of the other candidates from his assumptions or his conclusion. He did not even mention another candidate other than Rand Paul, and that did not exclude Paul from he assumptions or the conclusion.
LOL, you were afraid to say it directly, Trump is no threat because he’s dumb.
Even Bill Kristol recognizes how smart Trump is, and said so often in his column.
That’s not what happened as I read it.
