There are still many people who believe Cleopatra (of Anthony-Julius Caesar and Cleopatra fame) was black. She was Greek. There were other Cleopatras as it was a common name back then.

If the characters were Egyptian or North Africans such as Carthaginians then they were White. She was apparently demanding that Black actors portray White North Africans because after all, they were Africans.
