BALTIMORE

A few Notes on Riots

April 29, 2015

Rea L. Ginsberg, LCSW-C, ACSW, BCD

****

The moment we cease to hold each other,

The moment we break faith with one another,

The sea engulfs us and the light goes out.

– James Baldwin

My town is on fire. Spreading now to Washington D.C., New York City, Minneapolis, Philadelphia. No wonder. This is not just a Baltimore problem. This is a USA problem. This is a worldwide problem.

Long ago, I worked in those inflamed communities. I worked there for a year, 1966-67. When Dr. King was murdered in 1968 (he was 39 years old then), we set up a phone bank at the School of Social Work and tried to bring families and friends back together. The rioting was so ferocious and disorienting that people got lost in it! Urban agony and “the fierce urgency of now.”

One of my assignments focused on a cluster of public welfare individual homes. Society named it “the projects.” The community was isolated, far from view by most Baltimoreans. Clearly planned residential segregation. Out of sight and mostly out of mind – invisible, inaudible, and denied – as local government designed and desired. Despite the Civil Rights Act of 1964, racial segregation was entirely alive and very active. The homes were built next to long-haul railroad tracks that ran flat on the ground. There were no barriers to protect the residents from stepping onto the tracks and into train traffic. No fence, no bars or walls, no inclines or gates, no barricade against bloody disaster. WHY.

In the beginning, when I walked the streets in those impoverished neighborhoods, I was somewhat apprehensive. Much had been said about crime and substance abuse, alcoholism....

Because Welfare people are too stupid to avoid stepping in front of a train.

Maybe we should have high fences next to roadways, to keep Welfare people from stepping in front of motor-vehicle traffic.

What a pants load

Who does she think designed , taxed the working people to,pay for, built and dedicated those projects? Social liberals and democrats.

the new projects in my city are On the best waterfront land, built with features working people can’t afford like all brick facades central air and hardwood floors and still he dysfunction continues. Once someone moves in we can expect their next 4 generations to move in bringing illegitimacy unemployment and drugs

The grifters who set off the McKinney riots were section 8 tenants transplanted into the middle class and yet she ,set up her party crashing network under the name dime piece ($10’whore)

Laws should be a large part of the response, sensible national/Federal legislation. Positive government action. Over time, laws can change feelings, too. We know that because we have seen it. Maybe the new Attorney General of the U.S. can help

Yes, Ms. Ginsburg. Lord Obama is soon going to make it possible for your charges to live on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and have Fifth Avenue penthouses in New York. All the Democrats living there are looking forward to meeting their new neighbors.

BTW, how does a "social worker" retire? You probably made $25 k in your best year. Besides, why stop "working"? You and your brethren have made such Enormous progress in the world -- just look at Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, Ferguson, et al. Keep up the good social work.

From the article: “He (Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan) reported on socioeconomic issues for black Americans, issues of discrimination, social inequality, and limited opportunity. He argued in favor of government intervention for improvement: job programs, vocational training, educational programs and more.”

I think Senator Moynihan identified the problem, but his completely erred on the solution. No amount of government intervention can fix it. It’s a cultural, moral, and yes, economic problem. I don’t know if there is a solution for those communities at large, but individuals could still make it out...possibly...with assistance.

The Great Society programs sure did produce a great society, didn’t they?

Destroy the black family

Encourage illegitimacy

Discourage employment

Destroy self-worth garnered from self-reliance.

They sure aren't inept when it comes to spreading their disease through the mass media.

I believe Moynihan also skewered the issue of illegitimacy and the vanishing family , missing in her discussion

There is no more personal responsibity to be assigned than deciding who a woman opens her legs to

Yes. That’s the morality part of the equation. As most of us know, you cannot help people who are unwilling to help themselves. If you do try to do something for them, like build them nice homes, they let the homes fall apart for several reasons...

Economic: No money for repairs.

Education: No knowledge of how to maintain or repair what they own.

Morality: Using what is given to them destructively with no or little thought to the sacrifice of others who paid for it.

Community: Even if one had the money, skill, and morality to want to do what’s right, it’s difficult when the rest of the community around you is destroying their property, i.e. broken window theory.

I find it trivial to stay off unfenced tracks except for the occasional ad hoc crossing while walking the dog. Not at all a risk compared to many other adventures in daily life.

I don’t know if there is a solution for those communities at large...

The only possible solution is jobs. Put factories in those communities. Give folks a chance to make decent money, and have pride in themselves and their work.

But that would be a long shot. There would be a period of adjustment, and a few rocks thrown through a few factory windows just for fun. Add to that ridiculous government regulations imposed on those factories. And then there's union interference.

Yep, it would be a long shot.

We're still waiting to hear about the community policing they wanted once the evil police stopped being pro-active about law and order.

I am so sick of the delusions of these inner city apologists. If they can't accept sometimes heavy-handed police actions to keep them safe, they have to self-police.

Right . . . let's see how it works with overturning Roe v. Wade.
