I forgot the Kentucky I have been on board the New Jersey as a kid brother in law was in the navy and i visit the Iowa often its local to us Last one Wisconsin When we were in pearl we ran out of time to go on board the Missouri
The new US Zumwalt-class destroyers are 600 ft long and displace almost 15,000 tons. Big and powerful for a destroyer. They cost more than $3.5B a piece.
The USS Iowa displaced 45,000 tons. Three times as much as the Zumwalt. Building 4 battleships for $8B?
Hmmmmm
What class of BB was designed to supersede the Iowas?
That bow makes me nervous I hope its filled with styrofoam like a Boston Whaler
Iowa class BB’s include:
BB 61 Iowa
BB 62 New Jersey
BB 63 Missouri
BB 64 Wisconsin
BB 65 Illinois - cancelled prior to completion
BB 66 Kentucky - cancelled prior to completion
I doubt many of these spaces are accessible to the public.
A bow that resembles those of most of the US warships at the turn of the last century.
Montana class BB was up next after Iowa class BB
I thought the battleship concept died in WWII. However, there has been a vast change in the meaning of warship words in relation to their real power. For example I understand that a ship known as a Frigate today has more power than all the Navies of WWII combined. (Nuclear tipped missiles.)
“Define battleship.” to non military folks today, any boat with a gun on it is a “battleship.”
Most of those were straight very few reverse rake Those made me nervous too
Maybe they’re building them in China.
Very cool we are losing those men and history was talking to a kid one day my friend asked him about WW II he said oh yeah with Ben Affleck .....
USS Montana, BB 67
USS Ohio, BB 68
USS Maine, BB 69
USS New Hampshire, BB 70
USS Louisiana, BB 71
The Montana Class were to have had 12 big guns on two sets of turrets each side.
They were all canceled in July of 1943.
btw, Although BB 66 was never completed, the bow of the Kentucky was used to repair the bow of the Wisconsin after the Wisconsin was damaged in a collision in 1955.
I guess the recent reports that Germany is massing several platoons on the Polish border is nothing to really worry about.
Not ANOTHER Dreadnought Race!
The Last Time Germany did that it helped spark off The First World War!
But, That Mascot is based after an Iowa Class Battleship (OR Perhaps The South Dakotas, but the Iowas are more Famous).
While Technically they are Super-Dreadnoughts, The Iowa class was created many many years after the Dreadnought Classes had been replaced by the Fast Battleship Design.
