I chose life. That is to say, I defaulted on my student loans.
As difficult as it has been, Ive never looked back. The millions of young people today, who collectively owe over $1 trillion in loans, may want to consider my example.

If it were not for student loans, I would never have been able to go to college in the late 1960s.
When I finished school, I began repayments and never missed a payment. I felt my repayments provided funds for other students.
Defaulting on student loans is no different than defaulting on a home loan or car loan. Student loans are given based on one’s person. Defaulting on that is saying one is a scab, a scammer, one who should never have been issued a loan.
I have no sympathy. It took me about 5 years to finish my paybacks. Those were some lean years, as the student loan repayments were more than my rent.
Throw his little butt in jail.
Note he “brags” about being in college for 10 years. He also said it was a “liberal arts college” so we can reasonably assume his degree is in Transgendered Basket Weaving and of no value to anyone.
If I were a repo man I would LOVE to catch up with this guy.
Well if that’s the case, maybe it’s not a bad idea. ;^) I’ve got two kids in high school and college costs are daunting.
I didn’t mean you personally, BC - just the OP author.
So why, exactly, are we not putting this POS in prison at hard labor?
It would be fun collecting from this dude. Probably cost more than you’d collect, but it would be fun.
This guy has been a deadbeat for over three decades.
He is also the author of five books.
Maybe his publisher should keep his royalties, and see how he likes being stolen from.
Wikipedia says he has two kids, bet they are learning how to cheat their neighbors and acquaintances since Daddy sets the example and teaches them how. Some people in some cultures are very adept at it.
Hey i9t is happening all around us. The othr issues is there are young people whom have bought houses and refuse to pay taxes, utilities or even cut the grass. they wait until they are pulled into court and are forced to pay their bills, credit cards, taxes and utilities!
Because debtors prisons went out in the 19th century.
Wikipedia says he has two.
A perfect case for “Steal This Book”. Why should I have to pay for his book if he didn’t have to pay for the education that prepared him to write it?
Pretty neat trick since govt student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy..
He can rationalize all he wants but he signed a contract and he got something for it.
Of all the things that Obama has done since 2009, I think one of the most destructive things has been the obliteration of contractual laws and obligation.
What he did with General Motors epitomizes It.
This guy is a douche, but there is a larger point of allowing student loans to be cleared in bankruptcy, which I think should be allowed. Lenders need to take their part in ensuring borrowers can repay, as much as borrowers need to pay as agreed.
But circumstances change, and bankruptcy should be an option.
That will change academia fundamentally, as they are used to stupid kids paying sticker price no matter what they actually get for it.
Obviously, this guy has some other fundamental personality flaws besides being a whiner.
Not clicking on the New York Slimes, but I do know that the IRS is the collection agency of last resort for government issued or guaranteed student loans. It may take a while to get to the IRS, but once they get the debt, they NEVER quit trying to collect.
What a nasty little turd, this Lee Siegel. A self-important “writer” who thinks that others should pay for his bad choices and that grand theft is an acceptable mechanism to that end.
I paid off my student loans. I did it early. But it took a lot, and I do mean a LOT, of sacrifice on many levels. I never considered default, because I signed the paperwork and was taught that if you make a debt you pay it.
This whole article has an undercurrent of guilt in it, no matter how me tries to rationalize it away.
I took a job at age 18 after high school. I had an older sister and older brother who both went to (community) college, and there was no money left for me.
NOt wanting to take out loans, I worked in a factory, on all three shifts depending on what courses I needed to take. Took me seven years to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, and Mathematics. going to every college within a 50 mile radius of my home. My employer reimbursed my tuition for grades “B” or higher, I paid everything else while I worked 40+ hours. I did three semesters a year, Fall Spring, and Summers. No spring breaks, no vacations, no partying, or girlfriends, I worked and I studied.
After graduation, I was laid off two years later and went to work for an Ivy League College as an engineer shortly thereafter. I applied for the job from an advertisement in a newspaper. As a benefit I was able to obtain a Master’s Degree at no cost, working full time, and flexing my hours to meet the coursework schedule. Again, I studied, no vacations, spring breaks, or girlfriends.
It’s do-able if you set your mind to it. Manage your time, sacrifice luxuries, and other things.
This clown chose to stiff the taxpayer and we shoudl exact our pound of flesh from him. Prison, at hard labor for the repayment, and his living costs too.
