For decades, Gustavo Gutiérrez, a Peruvian theologian and Dominican priest, was treated with suspicion and even contempt by the Vatican’s hierarchy, which saw him as a dangerous Marxist firebrand who used faith as an instrument of revolution.

Gutiérrez was the founder of a progressive movement within the Catholic church known as liberation theology, and while he was never censured in the manner that some of his philosophical compatriots were, there were often rumblings that Gutiérrez was being investigated by Pope John Paul II’s doctrinal czar, a German cardinal named Joseph Ratzinger who would later become Pope Benedict.

In Nicaragua, priests inspired by liberation theology took an active part in the 1979 Sandinista revolution against Anastasio Somoza’s rightwing dictatorship. The philosophy also influenced leftist rebels in Mexico and Colombia, where one of the main guerrilla factions was led for nearly 30 years by a defrocked Spanish priest, Manuel Pérez.

Liberation theology is basically choosing man’s flawed systems over God’s. Let’s not look at history however, where we can see their results more clearly than the fuzzy pie in the sky theories given to us by proto-Marxists.

I suspected this was coming when a Jesuit was chosen Pope.

Jesuits were the leaders in Liberation theology for decades

From the Guardian, the harbinger of all things truthful about the Catholic Church.

Liberation theology is thinly disguised Marxism promulgated by the KGB. See http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3288315/posts

I’m sure the Guardian *wants to believe* the Church is warming to liberation theology. I’m 100% certain they want to believe that.

More evidence of the “great falling away” from Biblical principles.

The true founders of Liberation Theology worked in the building behind Felix Drezhinsky’s statue in Moscow. There are enough published KGB do to prove this reality. JP II knew it well. It would have been so much better if Francis possessed less Bernadone and more Xavier.

Exactly! I am also sure that the Guardian does not realize just how strongly the Church teaches about the dangers of liberation theology.

When the church began espousing this radical theology in the late 1970s, that’s when I exited. I was just becoming seriously aware of world political issues, and I was not going to be part of it, no matter how small.

I think Ion Pacepa has said that Liberation Theology was spawned by the KGB.

The CHURCH did NOT *espouse liberation theology.* That was all concocted by several semi-dissident and radically dissident clerics who were basically flying under the radar for awhile.

Liberation theology seeks to redistribute wealth through thievery backed by the state. Ration thinking people would seek to advance the poor by making them wealthy through increased production. I wonder if the College of Cardinals were paid off by Soros to elect this misfit as Pope.

Really now.. and the church put that fire out on the spot, did it? It went on for years, starting in the late 1970s. Were those radical priests excommunicated? Sanctioned?

I’m not surprised to read this. I’ve been hearing snippets of liberation theology coming from this Pope for a while now. I mentioned it to my sister who works for the church. She got upset and asked me if I thought that made the Pope a “bad” person. I said no but that it seems he’s leading the church in a Marxist direction. She didn’t like it. I’m not Catholic but it worries me . If the Catholic church goes, the days of the “remnant” are near indeed.
