The NFL's Deflategate report is a disaster for Tom Brady
Business Insider ^ | 5/7 | Cork Gaines

Posted on 05/07/2015 6:15:29 AM PDT by TangledUpInBlue

While the investigation focuses on the actions of two employees, locker room attendant Jim McNally and equipment assistant John Jastremski, the report also concludes that Tom Brady "was at least generally aware of the inappropriate activities of McNally and Jastremski involving the release of air from Patriots game balls."

This is a pretty damning accusation against one of the NFL's biggest stars.

The league's evidence against Brady centers on three main points: 1) his reaction to the condition of game balls used in a Week 7 game against the New York Jets in October, 2) how he interacted with McNally and Jastremski following subsequent games, and 3) how he communicated with the two after Deflategate exploded.

Yeah, I mean he would be nothing if he walked away today.....
Just a guy in his 30’s, a multi-millionaire, husband, father, with the rest of his life ahead of him. That would suck for anyone.

The final score was 45-7. Stop being a bunch of crybabies.

You've been saying that for 2 days now. You realize arguing about how the score turned out after the fact is not a valid defense to rule-breaking that occurred before the outcome could have been known, right? That they did not need to cheat to win does not excuse the cheating.

You also understand that this was not the first time, which is why the other team and officials had been alerted, right?

What was the score in the Super Bowls they won where they knew the other team's game plan by spying on their practices? Answer: We don't care.

We get it, you're a Patriots fan and don't care about their cheating so long as you get the win. That is part of why everyone else hates the Patriots so much, and why the championships they won under Belickick will always be less worthy of honor.

I think I'll go rob McGruff's house. If I get caught, I'll just buy my own TV and it will all be good. I had the money, so no big deal. And then, I'll do it again and again.

One thing no one is saying, but is absolutely true: No way those equipment guys do this without Belichick's approval. Anyone who works for that organization would never do something like this without him giving the ok, even for Brady. They just have no evidence about Belichick, no texts. He's smart enough to not send any texts like that.

One other thing, then you can come back with some "witty", illogical riposte, like "crybaby": I don't know what punishment the league will come up with, but even if it is harsh, the Patriots will never file a lawsuit. No way are they going to subject Tommy Boy and Belichick to having to testify under oath in any of this. They might appeal to a league arbitrator, but it will never get beyond that. The lying is what got A Rod and the Saints, not the conduct.

This is 100% correct. Or Goodell will once again look like an idiot.

Belichik is a brilliant football mind. He’s a detail oriented control freak who has hired his long time friend to essentially analyze every potential outcome of every potential “What if” both on and off the field. Google Ernie Adams if you don’t know who he is.

There is no way - NONE - that Belichik didn’t know what was going on. For him to say he didn’t know you could release air from a ball is preposterous. He has made comments in the past when he was with the Giants regarding all the ways they used to Doctor the ball - now all of a sudden he’s never heard of these techniques?? It’s simply not believable.

You realize that spotting a team a big lead changes the entire game, right? The play calling and strategies are all going to be a lot different, and you have to take more risk than if you are in a tight game. It is impossible to go back and say what might have been. There are games that end in blowouts that started from one miscue, and a game that might have been a nailbiter turns on one play. Indy got behind and then the bottom fell out. You have days like that in the NFL, and at all levels of sports. Then, the same two teams play again, and something totally different happens. No one knows why, it's just like throwing dice 80 times or so and seeing what happened. If you're the better team, the dice are weighted a little in your favor, but still, anything can happen.

The Patriots were a little better than the Colts, and would have won that game 60 or 70 percent of the time. I would prefer to see what would have happened without any cheating.

The NFL was warned before hand.

I would like the NFL to take this a real court. They'd be laughed out. Brady should sue them for defamation of character.

In most football games they have things called referees. Guess what their job is.

Either they were incompetent or maybe they were on the take.

Even if you took away all the points the Patriots scored in the first half (before the balls were switched out) the final score would have been 28-7.

Be a man. Admit you got the snot beat out of you.

There's no crying in baseball.

Oh, definitely. And yes, if the balls hadn't been deflated, who knows what could have happened. But with deflated balls, the score was 13-7. Not too big of a difference that would cause major strategy changes. And of course, the second half was a complete blowout 28-0.
Not justifying what happened, but I highly doubt an even match would have made much difference in the outcome.

ANY cheating in sports can cost millions, or billions, to the championship betting and to the sport overall.

The STOP GAMBLING/BETTING completely.

Then they'll ONLY CHEAT to WIN the game as opposed to affecting the betting. /s

Please...probably did something wrong - as stated in the reported, is not a standard of evidence I would want to rely on to punish anyone. The 4 Colt balls tested were also deflated....should they also be subject to fines or banned games? And to even compare this to Pete Rose or Lance Armstrong, is silly. How much did you lose betting on the Colts? Or was it Seattle?

“There’s no crying in baseball”

Clearly you know nothing of baseball. Ask Willie Mays what he thinks of Arod. Hank Aaron about Bonds. Any long time baseball fan what they think of small stadiums, steroids or any of the conduct MLB condoned during the Sosa-McGwire run off.

Not to mention pine tarred bats, stickum on pitchers arms and hats, corked bats, humidified balls.

He cheated, so be a big boy and pay the consequences.

I say suspend him for a couple of games and pay a fine which can be used to buy pressure guages that the refs can use. AND change the rules, why two sets of balls, in baseball there is one set, same should be true for football.
Fine him a million dollars, that should cover the ball expense.

I am not a Colts fan, but I am a fan of a preventing cheating and protecting some smidgen of integrity in the honesty of the game, even though humans are imperfect and officials make mistakes. Democrats don't care about cheating, they just want their "team" to win. Republicans, or rather conservatives, know that self-government can't exist without the rules of the game being followed, and for that reason, Republicans do not support cheating to win the vote, they try to police the cheating rather than cheating in response. That puts them at a disadvantage, and puts the rest of the NFL at a disadvantage when dealing with the Patriots, who have no problem with cheating if it helps them win. The only thing that keeps them from doing anything is the threat of being caught, and the kind of punishment they might receive if caught.

It is time to make the Patriots understand that cheating will not be tolerated. They are a repeat offender. The score of one game is irrelevant. The score of a game when the Patriots were spotted a lead is irrelevant. The Patriots had done it in other games, probably for a long time. Not needing to cheat in order to win is irrelevant. Next time you are pulled over for DUI, tell the cop that you haven't killed anyone yet, and make him wait to see if you make it home. If you do, all good.

You have no idea how a real court operates. I do. This will never get to a real court, because the first thing that happens is a subpoena to Tom Brady for his phone and then his depo under oath, and depos of the locker room guys. They will never let that happen, because Brady will not want to commit perjury, and the other guys will not take that bullet for Brady. He has to take his punishment, whatever minor suspension that Goodell gives him, and that will be that.

Is this you?

"Look at me, Tom, look at me!!!!"

I agree that the Colts looked like crap that day, and the Patriots likely would have won. No way to know for sure, though, and it doesn’t really matter. You don’t look at criminal behavior, or prohibited behavior, with hindsight. And it also is likely that this was not the first time, and on other occasions, it may have made a difference. Ask the Ravens, who noticed it in a close game.

You don’t need to actually hump Jesus’ leg, mind you, but do try to actually care about integrity. It might do you some good in life.

That is a line that would come right out out of a raging, liberal, atheist from Salon, Huffington Post, etc.

You have some serious issues. Sad if you are an actual teacher.
