...How clueless media applause excuses police brutality
Praising a mom for beating her son suggests only violence can discipline black kids. And she doesn't feel heroic
Baltimores Hero Mom has a name. Its Toya Graham.
And the woman lionized nationwide for beating her 16-year-old son on camera, and dragging him away from Monday nights riots, doesnt feel at all like a hero.
I dont. I dont, Graham told CBS This Morning on Wednesday. My intention was just to get my son and have him be safe. Later in the interview, Graham confesses, I just lost it. (Watch the whole thing at the end of this post.)
Her moment of losing it made her a hero to much of white America and not just to the right. Coast to coast, the media is hyping Graham as Hero Mom and her on-camera beating as Tough Love. Its not just Fox News or the New York Post, whose tabloid Send in the Moms front page this time reflects rather than rebukes the mainstream media. And thats heartbreaking.
The debate over the moment Graham says she lost it is complex. Theres a parallel black debate going on that, as always when it comes to racial issues, is richer and more nuanced. But anyone white whos applauding Grahams moment of desperation, along with the white media figures who are hyping her heroism, is essentially justifying police brutality, and saying the only way to control black kids is to beat the shit out of them.
Im aware that a lot of African Americans are lauding Graham, too. This piece isnt directed at them. Whether they applaud or critique Grahams corporal punishment,

I was simply telling the truth. What Joan Walsh does is what you do.
please, let the rest of us in on it, so we can have some context for what you are saying...
.....the only way to control black kids is to beat the shit out of them.....
To bad we cant do the same things to liberals, they sure as hell need it.
I believe your post is directed at someone else, as that quote is not one I made...
“please, let the rest of us in on it, so we can have some context for what you are saying...”
That would take all day! Here’s an example:
Check this page of a previous thread. Just look for his name and read his comments. It’s enough: http://209.157.64.200/focus/religion/3255008/posts?q=1&;page=106
That would take all day! Heres an example:
okay, I checked it out...pretty boilerplate Catholic bashing for this forum, perhaps a bit more hysterical than most...but I parsed the statement you referred to, and I found no anti Catholic sentiment in it at all, and referencing previous postings to attack a current one, lacking the context to do so, is part and parcel of what drives the ridiculous religious bickering that in my lowly opinion, drags this website into the gutter...
Good for her, and good for you. A LOT of the problems in this country have their roots in lack of discipline.
Having a husband for your kids would be preferable to your publicly disciplining your son to keep him out of trouble, yes.
Why don’t you use your 15 minutes of fame to promote that?
Respect and even fear of the authority of parents is what built Western civilization.
Based on the 5th commandment from Jehovah,
and thus rejected by the left because they
have chosen to be their own gods,
and reject Him.
Lily white Joan Walsh is an expert on racism and the black culture because she wrote a book about how to feel guilty for being white.
I would bet anything that she doesn’t have a single black neighbor and her kids have no association with blacks other than buying rap CDs.
Whatever! No matter what these people put into print or say on TV, 95% of parents, black or white, know in their heart and head, that that mother did the RIGHT thing.
Joan Walsh proved herself to be a hypocritical, white-hating racist bigot by what she wrote in the article accompanying this thread.
What that has to do with you, Catholicism or me is precisely nothing. You have come here to slander while denying slander, lie while proclaiming a direct lie to be the truth, and make a completely independent personal attack based on, apparently, your own hated of me.
I can see, therefore, very clearly what the Catholicism you claim to uphold as your inspiration has done for you. You should know that Catholicism does not affect others as it has you. Most Catholics I know are kind, honest people who draw on Catholicism for those very attributes.
Therefore some level of understanding you have about Catholicism is seriously wrong. Obviously you believe it supports the hatred and malice you are expressing towards me, and the open, mocking lies you are telling about what you are doing as you are doing it. You need to talk to a priest, and get some help. You've lost your way. I don't tell you to leave Catholicism - I'm telling you to embrace it and let it heal your troubled, hurting soul.
That is my response to you. If you keep up these personal attacks, I will file a complaint against you.
Go in peace.
“I don’t tell you to leave Catholicism - I’m telling you to embrace it and let it heal your troubled, hurting soul.”
That in itself is a personal attack on me for my sould is neither troubled nor hurting. You can’t even see your hypocrisy can you, Joan/Talisker?
Go in peace, Vlad.
Baby steps, mon frer. Baby steps.
(BTW, I am une soeur and not un frère.)
