EFF is fighting for vehicle owners rights to inspect the code that runs their vehicles and to repair and modify their vehicles, or have a mechanic of their choice do the work. At the moment, the anti-circumvention prohibition in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act arguably restricts vehicle inspection, repair, and modification. If EFF is successful then vehicle owners will be free to inspect and tinker, as long as they dont run afoul of other regulations, such as those governing vehicle emissions, safety, or copyright law.
Most of the automakers operating in the US filed opposition comments through trade associations, along with a couple of other vehicle manufacturers. They warn that owners with the freedom to inspect and modify code will be capable of violating a wide range of laws and harming themselves and others. They say you shouldnt be allowed to repair your own car because you might not do it right. They say you shouldnt be allowed to modify the code in your car because you might defraud a used car purchaser by changing the mileage. They say no one should be allowed to even look at the code without the manufacturers permission because letting the public learn how cars work could help malicious hackers, third-party software developers (the horror!), and competitors.
John Deere even argued that letting people modify car computer systems will result in them pirating music through the on-board entertainment system, which would be one of the more convoluted ways to copy media (and the exemption process doesnt authorize copyright infringement, anyway).

Only outlaws will have
“Making the driving of classic cars illegal”
0bama will simply have DHS buy up all the replacement parts.
That is a perfect illustration of what we are facing today.
I "own" a premium smart TV, and two of the three most-used apps disappeared off of it within the last year - one without warning. The content providers and the TV manufacturer couldn't some to terms on licensing, I guess. Boy was I surprised to learn that I didn't have a say in retaining what I paid extra for!
Car manufacturers should be required to clearly state what information is collected, who has access to it and, since it is collected, how we can freely access our own information. And, should we choose, to opt out of collecting and/or sharing information. At present I don’t think they say anything about this. Plus, what happens when a car is sold to another person? Do they get the previous owner’s info and how/when/where does the new owner get this info/notice? And, to complicate things, what if someone borrows your car?
That right there is a violation of your rights to property and they will eventually be sued in class action.
What next? Stuff disappearing off my computer?
Can I send them a bill for storage and maintenance?
The manufacturer should include protection from lawsuits if the firmware executing on their car hardware is not certified. You break it, you're responsible for the consequences. It worked fine when it left the manufacturer.
AND It’s still illegal to unlock your cell phone. I feel much safer.
OH. I don’t recommend anyone to take their diesel fuel automobiles and turn off the exhaust fluid system. Yes...I would have thought exhaust fluid was a joke, like the old left handed screwdriver, BUT it’s reality.
You don’t even “own” your own land anymore either...
You just rent everything now, that is the way things “are”
Everyone is a renter and the government and big business only compete with each other with what share they take as our “benevolent slumlords in perpetuity”.
01m or dsg?
My son purchased a new TDI with DSG and was very surprised about the trans maintenance cost.
Has 20k on it now, the cost for D I Y appears to be going down.
Just find an old mini desktop computer with HDMI to hang off it... a wireless kb/glidepad... maybe wireless networking...
You'll never go back. I haven't accessed the smart apps since.
[ Just so everyone understands: 60% to as much as 80% of dealership revenues are generated from service and parts.
Most people assume they make their money on selling vehicles. Not so.
This is why they are pushing for ownership of property, which you purchased: To enhance revenue opportunities at the dealership level.
Which is fine, if they change the way vehicles are purchased.
For instance; in a lease, the manufacturer and its agents(dealerships) are responsible for maintenance of vehicles. You are responsible for gas and insurance.
In a purchase, cash or financed, you own the vehicle outright at the end but, ownership transfers from the vehicle manufacturer once it leaves the dealership and it co-owned by the finance company and the purchaser.
Doesnt matter if you finance through Ford Credit either. They are a wholly separate company.
If auto manufacturers want to enhance revenue then they need to come up with unique leasing.
This would be the equivalent of saying you cannot alter your cell phone, even if you bought it outright.
Same with computers. You would not be allowed to modify them in anyway whatsoever...
All of which is fine, so long as the manufacturer sells the property as a service, maintains a service level and takes the POS back at the end of a contract.
Then again, expect lawyers to get involved, particularly tax lawyers because a capital purchase is treated several ways for the purpose of reducing obligations to various givernments, mostly the Fedzilla.... ]
SNl could make one heck of a killer Sketch based off an old west town with a wagon seller using the same “techniques” that cars are sold today and all.
Your Wagon is on lease, and you can;t fix your wagon if it break on your own or we will sue you.
You may recall a court ruling not that long ago.
The ruling may have set a precedent regarding this topic.
A court ruled that the owner of an X-box could not crack the thing open and modify it.
The ruling, IIRC, had nothing to do with “warranties” but with Microsoft’s ability to control what happens to their product after it was sold.
that sign is hysterical. My mom frigging panics when the sign comes on I want to smash it. It’s a 50 dollar ripoff!!
Hasn’tt Ruth Bader-Meinhof Ginsburg aged wonderfully though!!
Better to just turn off the smart TV features and use your own Roku, Raspberry Pi running RaspBMC, or the like.
The new gen Raspberry Pi makes a nice home theater PC for cheap, and is about the size of a pack of cigarettes.
TDI with DSG. The dual clutch was just replaced for $1700. They are a known bad item and are on drawing revision DC. I could not find a recall on them but the design is bad. The non-VW tech I found to replace it said they all go bad, some sooner than other. Mine had 92k and sounded loud.
