Washington (AFP) - Secretary of State John Kerry will visit the Arctic Circle next week for key ministerial talks on climate change amid global concerns about rising seas and accelerating ice melt.
Global warming is happening twice as fast in the Arctic than elsewhere on the planet and many fear not only devastating impacts of warming but also from an influx of people and industry on the pristine environment, wildlife and Inuit culture.
Kerry will attend a meeting of the Arctic Council in the northwestern Canadian town of Iqaluit, on Baffin Island.
The United States on April 24 formally takes over the two-year rotating membership of the intergovernmental forum -- comprising countries with territory within the Arctic -- Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States.
The body aims to promote cooperation on environmental protection, as well as to help govern oil and mineral exploitation, shipping, tourism and fishing.

Hoaxes like this are just very expensive welfare projects for people like Kerry. There is no actual problem, and therefore no actual work to be done. It’s just a lot of rich people getting someone else to pay to fly them around the world to these boondoggles where they get to stay in expensive hotels, eat expensive food, get waited on hand and foot. Then they sit around and flatter themselves about how important and brilliant they are while they decide what burdens (that they are exempt from) to inflict on the rest of us.

Kerry should be made aware that those arctic glaciers began receding in earnest after the 1890s. By 1927, some glaciers had already receded dramatically. I just don’t see how industrialization by that time could at all account for such dramatic losses of the glaciers. Rather, I have a strong hunch it has something to do with the sun, for some reason.
Check out these before and after pictures from the Weather Channel. I was amazed at how much the glaciers had receded by the 1920s and 1930s.
Another thing that struck me is how barren and uninhabitable the locations were in 1890, i.e., no vegetation whatsoever and just bleak ice and snow. In contrast, the same areas now are covered in plentiful trees and grasses, making for a beautiful landscape.
