Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), the newest and youngest official Republican candidate for president, has said he believes marriage should be “traditional”—between a man and a woman.
So Fusion’s Jorge Ramos asked him: If someone in his family or on his staff were gay and getting married, would he attend the wedding?
“If it’s somebody in my life that I care for, of course I would,” Rubio told Ramos in an interview on Wednesday.
“I’m not going to hurt them simply because I disagree with a choice they’ve made or because I disagree with a decision they’ve made, or whatever it may be,” he added. “Ultimately, if someone that you care for and is part of your family has decided to move in one direction or another or feels that way because of who they love, you respect that because you love them.”
Rubio spoke with Ramos about a variety of issues, including marriage equality, immigration reform, climate change, President Barack Obama’s move to normalize relations with Cuba, and which rapper or singer he’d like to perform at his potential 2017 inauguration.
In the early throes of his campaign, Rubio has positioned himself as the candidate of “tomorrow.” He has cast himself as a young, fresh alternative to other Republicans and to likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who he referred to in his announcement speech as the candidate of “yesterday.”
But his stance on gay marriage has led to questions on whether he’s more out of touch than Clinton with young people on certain issues. According to a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 74 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds said they were in favor of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. On Tuesday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper called Rubio “the candidate of yesterday” on the issue of marriage equality.
Rubio said that while he personally opposes gay marriage, he would encourage people in favor to petition their state legislatures to permit same-sex marriages. He does not think the decision should be left up to courts, he said.
“I would point out that we live in a free society,” Rubio said. “If people want to change the definition of marriage, they should petition their state legislature, and they can have that debate in the political arena. Who I don’t think should be redefining marriage is the court system.”
Rubio, who is Catholic, noted that his faith also teaches that divorce is wrong, and he drew on that as a comparison to his personal feelings on gay marriage.
“But again, as I said, I’m a member of the Catholic faith that teaches, for example, that divorce is wrong,” Rubio said. “But if someone gets divorced, I’m not going to stop loving them or having them a part of our lives.”
You are correct. Rubio no business playing ball with the media when they start asking these irrelevant questions. The fact that Rubio 1. didn’t swat the question away immediately, and 2. chiose to give an in-depth answer indicates that he is either 1. clueless and/or 2. willing to cooperate with the media. This simple event speaks volumes. Rubio is NOT the candidate for me. So far it is Cruz.
This is a true statement. The goal is to destroy Catholicism completely. The tactic uses public shaming of the group or individual to cause them to sin and abandon their faith. The more public the Catholic individual the bigger the prize.
As social creatures, we are very much afraid of being alone and ostracized. The solution is to love God more than you love yourself and your status. Only then are you truly free. Be not afraid, for if God is with you than no one can be against you.

People want someone who actually stands on principle.
If I attend a "gay marriage" what does my presence signify? And yes, it IS related to my beliefs. If it is simply to celebrate two people who love each other and their wish to share their excitement and joy, well that is one thing. Parties are fun, if well done.
And, if that is all marriage is, one is hard pressed to make a coherent argument against "gay marriage." At least, I am.
But, Christian marriage is more, much more than a party. Regardless of the tradition that Christians may embrace, all must accept that a marriage ceremony is more than a party. And my presence at one or the other ceremony indicates my understanding, approval and support of what is actually going on.
My disapproval of "gay marriage" goes beyond my revulsion of the physical acts the two are telling me they engage in.

Marriage shows us something about the Church. And a man AND a woman are the vital elements of that showing. That simply cannot be done with two men or two women.

Just curious...why do you say that? I'm not trying to argue. It's just that I've wondered myself whether Rush is a Christian, but I really don't know.
I am an Orthodox Christian. My argument is not sectarian, but should be acceptable to Christians of all traditions. I do welcome Christians of other traditions to show where I am wrong.
I’ve never been impressed with Marco Rubio. He looks like a dufus and when he is not speaking talking points, he talks like a dufus. He lacks any core beliefs and is willing to take any position that he thinks will please the crowd he is speaking to. He lacks any genuine charisma and would make a pitiful candidate and a terrible leader.

If you are Roman Catholic and understand “holy matrimony” as a sacrament, then your attendance at such a religious travesty confirms your cooperation in the “error”, in the same manner that your attendance at the Eucharist confirms your “community” in your parish.
If you don’t agree that holy matrimony is of/at he same level as the Eucharist, then....you just might be Lutheran.
I sure hope he says that in his commencement speech at Liberty University. Maybe the grads will write Romans 1:26-27 on their hats.
It isn’t only Catholicism. A Christian of any stripe would view attendance at a queer wedding as open defiance of God. It amounts to sanctioning and even celebrating something God says is detestable.
It is the absolute opposite of “common sense.”
He Rubio, if two Satanists that were close family members invited you to a Black Mass, would you attend so as not to hurt their feelings?

If the marriage is between members of the same sex, then it is a PAGAN RITUAL.
No Christian would be caught dead attending a PAGAN RITUAL. If they were caught dead there, they’d be on the expressway to Hell.

Answer: “I have not been invited to a Gay wedding. I receive many invitations to many weddings and other events. My decision on whether I might attend is based on many things. If the question is might I attend a Gay wedding the answer is yes I might.”
Don’t give me the “STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS” nonsense. The way to deal with the MARXstream press is to answer “GOTCHA” questions with meandering, confusing, and long winded answers that really say nothing.
(Don’t have a direct link but) Within the few months after WTC was attacked on 9/11, Mr. Limbaugh opined that all religions referenced the same “god” only in a different set of words and languages.
Rush appears to be a Unitarian by this statement.
Limbaugh’s lips have been glued to Rubio’s behind ever since Rubio burst onto the national scene—Why, I don’t know—But it’s clear that Rush has abandoned any pretense of critical, objective assessment and is all in for the Rube.
Me, on the other hand, I won’t vote for Rubio for anything going forward.
