Barry University has suspended a student reporter for her participation in a Project Veritas video that featured a university coordinator assisting in the creation of an ISIS club on campus.
The student journalist, identified only as Laura, recorded her efforts trying to launch a Sympathetic Students in Support of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, student group last week.
This morning, she received an emailed notice from Maria Alvarez, the universitys associate vice president and dean of students, stating she had been suspended over allegations that her reporting violated the universitys Code of Conduct.
In response to complaints filed by members of the University community on Wednesday, April 3, and received by my office this morning, April 6, 2015, your alleged actions were the cause root of disruption of the University community and the creation of a hostile environment for members of the University staff, the notice read. Because these alleged actions violate Barry Universitys Code of Conduct, effective immediately you are placed on Interim Suspension from Barry University.
The universitys Code of Conduct demands that [m]embers of the campus community must act out of mutual respect to establish an atmosphere of trust, and that enrollment at the school presumes an obligation on the part of the student to act at all times in a manner compatible with the universitys purpose, processes and functions.
Laura, a senior majoring in communications, was recently recognized as a Senior of Distinction by the Barry University Communications Department.
This is a personal attack on an honor student because they couldnt defend the egregious actions of their staff members, James OKeefe, founder of Project Veritas, told Campus Reform.
Not only is it a possible violation of her civil rights, but its also an assault on the freedom of the press, too.
During the suspension, Laura is forbidden from visiting the Barry University campus or attending classes.
Great work, James. Bullet proof vests on, old vehicles only, non GPS throwaway cell phone only. You know how they work...
I think she has pretty lucrative lawsuit coming up.
Guess I’ll be sending a note to Maria Alvarez then.
Laura just got a very valuable educational experience regarding the not-so-liberal and tolerant left. I hope she takes it to heart.
How ironic that Laura goes to school at “Barry University”
April 3 was Friday not Wednesday.
So, don't you DARE record us when we are facilitating terrorist organizations, and let others know about it! Because then YOU are the problem!!! Journalism majors should know better than to record conversations and report on them to the general public. Why, imagine what would happen if a whole industry was set up around gathering facts and broadcasting them out to the public at large to educate them about the world around them. It would help them understand everything going on around them, North, East, West and South. They might even use N-E-W-S as an acronym for communicating that notion! The horrors!!
It would have been better if James had used somebody who could not be so easily retaliated against.
Lawsuit? I think so.
Student whistleblowers will be prosecuted according to the book of Hussein.
If someone atarts a Crowdfund to pay for her lawsuit, I'm in for $20.
You are not allowed to question the Inner Circle.
Pray America is waking
me too
Female student suspended for discovering that a male university employee was willing to help a patriarchal organization known for having a rape culture.
5.56mm
She probably wasn’t naive to those facts already.
It appears Laura did not get a fair hearing before anyone let alone a judge. Suspension like this is seizure of her property (paid tuition money) without due process.
I saw a phone number on the letter.
You talk about chicken-sh!t
