..New York has nine specialised high schools, of which eight admit students using the citys Specialist High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The education they offer rivals that of private schools that charge $40,000 a year. The high schools are free. The most popular, Stuyvesant, sends roughly 25% of its graduates to the Ivy League or other top colleges. The schools unofficial mantra is Sleep, study, socialise: pick two. It admits 4% of test-takers, pickier than Harvard.
New Yorks Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio thinks the SHSAT favours parents who can afford tutors. He wants to broaden (ie, relax) the admissions criteria, to help poorer black and Hispanic families.
The SHSAT also faces a legal challenge. The NAACP, the countrys biggest civil-rights legal defence fund, joined others in 2012 to file a suit demanding changes in admissions procedures. New York Citys public schools, the suit claims, are among the most racially segregated in the country
... Asians make up more than 70% of pupils at Stuyvesant; blacks and Hispanics combined make up 3%, and falling. White pupils took 80% of places in 1970; now it is less than 25%.

The reason you can have a GPA greater than 4.0 is that AP courses are weighted higher than a normal course. So an A in an AP course is considered a 4.3, rather than a 4.0.
Yes, AP courses count, as well as well as taking college courses. Both are options for spiking a GPA in California. There are kids applying with 4.9 and 5.0 GPAs. And I maintain it’s bu@&$”!;!.
GPA spiking past 4.0 is dishonest resume padding, and it shouldn’t be allowed.
Yes, you did. I'm saying that foreign-Asian educational concepts should not be encouraged or imported into western schools. That means cramming centers and tiger-mom culture and the rest of the pathological asian crap.
The only argument for affirmative action for Blacks and Latinos that ever made sense to me had to do with this issue of boosting GPAs by AP courses, etc. I think you can make a rational argument that this unfairly prejudices Blacks and Latinos (and I think you are also arguing white students to an extent) because they are in poorer schools that don’t provide AP courses and don’t have access to other things that you can use to boost your GPA like students from wealthier areas. So, hypothetically, a black kid could be just as smart as an Asian kid and have a 4.0 GPA, but he looks less qualified because he did not have the opportunity to take AP courses.
I know there was talk in the 1990s of a class action being filed on that issue, but I don’t know if it ever was, or if it was, what the outcome of that litigation was.
“American kids ARE being punished. If you elect to play baseball instead of taking a college course in fluid mechanics during the summer between ninth and tenth grade, youre going to lose your slot in the smart school to the Chinese-style study camp prisoner.”
I don't know why any American kids are being punished. Neither of my kids wound up being punished or in Chinese-style study camp prisons.
We're not Asian, we're of European ancestry, if that matters.
My older son played baseball (poorly). AND basketball (even worse). My younger son wasn't much interested in sports. But they both had other interests that they pursued.
However, they did their homework every night. They did the rote memorization required to learn certain basic facts. In math, physics, and chemistry, they spent the time to do the myriad problems, sometimes multiple times, to understand fully the material. They practiced their languages over and over. When they were taking music, they practiced every day, and with diligence. When the older one took karate, he practiced his forms & stuff every day.
And they still had plenty of time to goof off, play in the yard, read, write for pleasure, draw for pleasure, engage in projects, meet with friends, go to teen club or youth group. They went on camping trips. My older son even had a girlfriend for part of his time in high school.
But they had very little TV, no video games, no computer games, no Xbox, no Nintendo, no gameboy.
What they had were two parents who made sure every night they'd done their homework. Who put them at the kitchen table when they did their homework, so we could make sure they were working and not up in their bedrooms goofing off when they were supposed to be doing homework.
They studied very hard, got grades at or near the top of their classes (my older son was valedictorian), aced all the standardized tests, and both are currently students at Harvard.
It's amazing the things one can accomplish when one cuts out the passive, brain-killing, soul-deadening, couch-potato stuff.

Journal of Blacks in Higher Education:
Blacks from families with incomes of more than $100,000 had a mean SAT score that was 85 points below the mean score for whites from all income levels, 139 points below the mean score of whites from families at the same income level, and 10 points below the average score of white students from families whose income was less than $10,000.Blacks are also significantly more likely to use test prep services.
Highly selective colleges and universities, like the Ivies, use holistic admissions. This means, in part, that they evaluate students within the context of the high school resources available to them.
A student who attends a high school without AP courses isn't going to be rejected for failure to take AP courses. As well, these schools usually look at the applicant's transcript in detail, not at the total weighted GPA. A student with a 4.0 that's all straight As with no APs who attends a school where no APs were offered will be at an advantage to the student with a > 4.0 but who has a couple of Bs and maybe even a C or two. In fact, these schools normally normalize applicant's grades to an unweighted 4.0 scale. When they report statistically on their admitted students, and they report “Our freshmen class had a mean high school GPA of 3.93,” that's unweighted.
At top schools, they expect successful applicants to be those students who took the most rigorous curriculum available to them. Along with their transcript, the high school sends a Secondary School Report that outlines the number of AP courses available, the number of honors courses, what the typical curriculum looks like at the school, how the applicant's transcript compares to other students at the school.
The disadvantage to students who don't have these courses, or similar courses, available to them, is they just miss out on the actual learning. But increasingly, most high schools offer AP or IB courses, and thus, even this disadvantage is fading.

Yet if you have two guys who are like guy 2 but one of them has a higher IQ odds are that he would get a better grade
Also technically, what collapsed in 1911 was not a Chinese monarchy but a Manchu Empire. The Manchu conquered China in the 17th century ( incidently the same time when the Moghuls (Mongol descendents) conquered India) and persecuted the native Han. Some of the bloodiest wars in world history were by the Manchu against the Han. This made both China and India ruled by foreign empires ( Mongolic) before the Europeans could expand. This also explains, to me, why the Europeans were able to easily dominate India and china
I think there is a happy medium between the two. The type of school you (and I) went to WAS that ode point: giving kids a sense of boundaries yet not making them into automatons. I don’t like the Montessori method for too young kids but think it good at a later stage. I think of my time in Engineering where the first year was just theories and yet in the final year we were able to take these and create something new in our thesis. You can’t compose a symphony without knowing the scales...
Jews and Asians vote Dem because of perception
good advice
The liberal news media has you all brainwashed and believing that successful people are there because they are “brilliant”, intelligent or talented. that is a BIG lie the socialist news media drill into your head to keep you small and that is so that you don't try . The media wants you (every individual) weak, small ,poor and so dependent on government/democrats. You think the media wants you to be wealthy or have 3 houses owned and paid off? no way cause then you might not need government and or not vote for democrats. So they train you , they drill in to your head the lie that only the talented or intelligent can suceed so that you say "oh i can't be rich or do what he did cause he's a genius and I'm not" . No someone might be doing better than you in some business because he knows more about that than you and worked very hard to get there Anyone can do anything if they set their mind to it and work hard at it every day for long periods of time.
Hey i’m trying to liberate you all from socialist brainwashing . bash me ridicule me if you want. but your liberal masters programmed you . just remember what is socialism/communism “from each according to his ability to each according to his need” . so that assumes that there are many individuals who can't provide for themselves that are needy and the talented have to provide for them . that is ridiculous and has never worked. now America and capitalism says that you make your own way through hard work and I believe that.
The media has sold you a lie. you are their puppet. i have proved a million times over .if someone can do something so can i . there is nothing that someone else has done that you(in general anyone) can not also do.
there is much more that can and will say but enough of this . time for me to get to work!

I wrote a long more general post to you as a reply but also adding here that the ones who gets a better grade is not the one with the “higher IQ” but the one who knows how to study better. Knowledge is power.studying is just a skill that can be learned . and through learning that skill and practicing it then the one who is more skilled at studying will get the better grade .there is no such thing as IQ or intelligence.
you can do anything if you set your mind to it
Knowledge is power. practice makes perfect. experience is everything.
ok lets say you need an operation done on you. you have a choice of 2 doctors . 1 has the higher IQ but he just graduated medical school and says he knows how to do the operation and can do it. number 2 has had 20 years experience doing the exact same operation treating your condition thousands of times. who do you choose? obviously almost everyone will choose #2 .so here as every where else intelligence or IQ mean nothing .
who will have a better chance of getting it right?
Anyone can become an expert at anything through hard work, hours of daily practice at it, research, persistence,
You do have a very interesting point of view. It is not that I haven't heard it before. I watched the movie “My Fair Lady” after all. I am not trying to ridicule you in any way, but your belief is more of a philosophy for living. If your belief system gives you self-confidence and causes you to attempt to accomplish things that others would not then that is probably a good thing in most cases.
I actually live by a similar credo; and in general don't believe there is anything that I could not accomplish if only I had enough time.
But I have experienced something that it would seem that you obviously have not. I have actually worked as a tutor and instructor. I also have spent a lot of time working with the public. I can tell you from hard, long and sometimes frustrating personal experience that aptitudes and intelligence vary greatly among individuals. Insisting otherwise is completely unrealistic.
Many years ago I had a work study job at a community college tutoring people who had learning disabilities. It quickly became apparent that not only do people have different aptitudes, but people do not even think in the same way. There can be very dramatic differences in the way that people's minds work.
Since the 1980s I also have spent a lot of time teaching people how to use computers. This has also been quite eye opening. I would challenge you to “put your money where your mouth is” and volunteer or start working somewhere trying to tutor or teach. Most likely it would not take very long for you to modify your personal philosophy. People's aptitudes vary greatly. Some people are very good at certain things, but will never be able to perform well in other areas.
You are the one who has been brainwashed by the liberal media and philosophy. Conservatives generally believe in equal opportunity; many liberals believe that everyone is equal which seems to be what you are saying. Liberals then say that if there should then be equal distribution of people in every facet and level of basically everything, and if there is not then quotas need to be imposed. Is that what you believe?
this shows that the main tenet of socialism says that people differ greatly in their abilities so its up to government to make everyone have an equal outcome cause the poor “dumb” or “untalented” or “unintelligent can't produce for themesleves (welfare is an example). i’am saying anyone through hard work can produce and become successful. the liberals/socialists/communists say many people can't produce for themselves so the government must take from those who do and give to those who can't. that is a socialist big lie. another socialist lie that fits in with this thinking is that of the myth of the talented genius which is meant to keep you small and so that you don't try to be successful and so that you will be dependent on government
I agree with that . and that's what I've been saying. not just you or I . we are not geniuses you and i are not special anyone can do that if they set their mind to it. and the limiting factor is time. but if you decide to put the time and effort to it then you (anyone can accomplish anything.
so you agree with me here but the rest of your postings contradict yourself that that statement.
and no i don't believe in government. I don't trust government. government is unaccountable .the only thing gov should do is military , courts and border control
