Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tex., on Monday is expected to announce he's running for president. However well he ends up doing in the Republican primaries, one thing is for sure the development is terrible news for Sen. Rand Paul's presidential ambitions.
Whatever small chance Paul had in the 2016 presidential race was premised on his ability to reach beyond the core supporters of his father's, by articulating a message that appealed to a broader coalition of Republicans. The biggest opportunity Paul had for growth was with Tea Party voters who would be drawn to his limited government message. The biggest obstacle he had was foreign policy views that are also out of step with many of those voters.
In an ideal world for Paul, he'd try to find a way to assuage the concerns of national security-oriented conservative voters without totally alienating his core supporters. And one way to do that was attack the other candidates for being insufficiently committed to limited government principles. That already difficult task becomes effectively impossible with Cruz in the race.

Exactly....he’s not even conservative in my book.
Ted will cave on immigration though.
You’re just absolutely, 100% wrong on point #1. Cruz supports giving amnesty & work permits to people currently here illegally:
Did you really not know that? Or are you intentionally posting lies?
NEVER !
That would be the death knell for Cruz !
Perhaps, but whomever runs second in the primary race has a shot at the vice position. Who knows.
Cruz would capture conservatives, some Hispanic (Cuban community for sure), portion of republicans.
Rand would capture some republicans, conservatives, libertarians and a portion of the moderate democrats.
Rand Paul is more conservative than libertarian, his father was opposite...more libertarian.
We gotta long way to go yet.
I also suspect that you are giving Rand more possible voters than there are/could be.
Just speculation at this point. Rand Paul did very well at CPAC. In fact, I believe he came in first.
I’m not a huge Rand Paul supporter, but I can tell ya, if it were Rand Paul or Jeb, Christie, Graham...I would vote for Rand.
My son, who is in Special Forces, says a lot of the guys there like a Paul, I don’t remember which one. Why would that be the case?
I loathe the Pauls, father and son, and Rand is now a GOP-Eer, so there's little difference between him and jebbie on many topics.
Speculation is fine, when it is based on solid facts.
They hate the CIA perhaps???
The SF are independently minded and highly self motivated. They love what they do so much that they can't stand seeing their blood earned work wasted and the deep loyalties they carefully and courageously cultivated with the world's oppressed people betrayed over and over again by our cynical leaders.
I don't know that Ron Paul and Rand Paul fear God. Individualistic humanism is as bad as collectivist humanism. But the Paul's do seem loyal to the truth and they also hate covetousness. I think Ted Cruz's speech today is the 1st time I've heard someone promise to lay waste to more of the statist status quo than Ron Paul has.
Really? Conservatives are better for Jeb Bush? How? He's just an overweight version of Obama.
LOLOLOL!
And....you're gone.
Still a dead troll.
Bald Ron’s daily wig is more subtle, but I like the colors.
/bingo
Divide and conquer.
If you have a dozen or so conservatives running in 2016 and only one major GOPE/RINO-—Jeb-—running that helps Jeb.
History shows the conservatives only chance of capturing the GOP presidential nomination is when movement conservatives are solidly united behind one candidate. This has happened only twice in my lifetime: In 1964 and 1980.
Article just posted says Ted has just peeled off three key Paul supporters in Iowa.
Problem not solved if a whole bunch of conservatives enter the primaries as expected dividing the conservative vote.
