‘Hands up, don’t shoot’ did not happen in Ferguson
WaPo ^ | 3/22/2015 | Michelle Ye Hee Lee

This phrase became a rallying cry for Ferguson residents, who took to the streets to protest the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer, Darren Wilson. Witness accounts spread after the shooting that Brown had his hands raised in surrender, mouthing the words “Don’t shoot” as his last words before being shot execution-style. The gesture of raised hands became a symbol of outrage over mistreatment of unarmed black youth by police.

That narrative was called into question when a St. Louis County grand jury could not confirm those testimonies. And a recently released Department of Justice investigative report concluded the same.

Yet the gesture continues to be used today. So we wanted to set the record straight on the DOJ’s findings, especially after The Washington Post’s opinion writer Jonathan Capehart wrote that it was “built on a lie.” From time to time, we retroactively check statements as new information becomes available. In this case, the Justice Department has concluded that Wilson acted out of self-defense, and was justified in killing Brown.

Does “Hands up, don’t shoot” capture the facts of Brown’s shooting? What has it come to symbolize now?

Even the comments at the WaPo, of all places, are generally going against it and the lie.

WHAT! Sadly, the first lie out of the gate continues to win over the IPOS/SPOS/LPOS and their ilk. When are the pro affaleets going to get a front page stating their apology? Uh, never.

Holder knew well that ‘his people’ prefer a lie if it supports/promotes the victimhood mentality. He can therefore afford to change his tune because ‘his people’ will continue to prefer the lie.

Oh, c'mon, tell us how you REALLY feel!

(Most of the time there is a "skip ad" button somewhere on the page. That's the first thing I look for.)

Actually a darn good article. Surprising, considering the source.

Fake but accurate doesn’t seem to be flying very well this time.

Has anyone else noticed how often the Left’s racist/sexist causes celebre of recent years have routinely blown up in their faces? How often the facts of a case have differed widely from the initial presentation?

Just off the top of my head: Duke Lacrosse team, Martin/Zimmerman, University of VA rape, and now the Ferguson hands up bit.

Since actual injustices continue to happen in America, as in any country of >300M people, including racist/sexist injustices, that they seem to have such difficulty finding legitimate examples indicates they are probably very rare indeed.

LOL yeah I know ... just venting

I got rid of TV completely a few years ago- i only have internet

But it seems like there are more commercials now on the internet than there ever was on TV

And if you want to watch ANOTHER 30 second clip on the same web site you gotta sit through the same commercial again... over and over and over...

It has gotten to the point that if a commercial starts, I just close the page and not bother.

SOMEONE should tell these companies that a 2 or 3 second flash of “brought to you by XXX company” would be more than sufficient and people would be grateful NOT to have to sit through it again and again

We see a microcosm on FR. Just recently Tony Stewart and Bruce Jenner have been convicted of murder and the Patriots convicted of cheating.

Yup.

I think, on both sides, it’s mostly a result of confirmation bias. When we run across something that lines up exactly with what we already believe, we are MUCH less likely to examine skeptically whether it is really true or not.

Or, as someone has put it, we like stories with truthiness.

I’ve fallen for it myself, most notably when I posted on FR Jefferson Davis’ Enslavement Proclamation he issued in response to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

I’ve got a pretty good eye for language as used in different periods, so I seldom fall for fake Lincoln or Jefferson quotes and the like.

It turned out this Enslavement Proclamation was from the 1860s equivalent of The Onion.

But it lined up so well with my belief system I swallowed it whole.

Real problem is our MSM and politicians aren’t making mistakes, they’re lying.

When there’s no such thing as truth, then there can be no facts. It’s all just ‘narrative’, innocents be damned. This is now entering sciences. Affirmative action in civil engineering and medicine are ushering a new, real Dark Ages.

Even the DOJ report confirming ‘hands up don’t shoot’ was a lie was spun by the media. Instead of THAT being the story, it was a story on racist emails.

Anything to fit the false narrative.

WaPo finally gets around to printing the truth of what happened, didn't happen? Being as they were part of the lie!

The comments are coming in fast and furious on their page.

Recently read an essay by a feminist lamenting the “male mindset” of mathematics and engineering.

I hope all those with similar feelings are aboard the first test flight of the airplane designed using feminist math.

You obviously haven't watched TV recently.
Commercial breaks are now so long (and frequent), they've resorted to sticking in a teaser just to remind you what show you were watching.
Quite frankly, with TV stations being broadcast on the public's airwaves, I don't see how 12-13 minutes of commercials during a 30 minute show is in our best interest.
Where the hell is the FCC? Nevermind ...

It must've been those two cops getting shot.

Not that the MSM minds cops getting shot, I think they were more worried about public opinion turning against their little race narrative.
