Gun ownership among Americans at a record low, survey finds
By Tribune wire reports contact the reporter
The number of Americans who live in a household with at least one gun is lower than it's ever been, according to a major American trend survey that finds the decline in gun ownership is paralleled by a reduction in the number of Americans who hunt.
According to the latest General Social Survey, 32 percent of Americans either own a firearm themselves or live with someone who does, which ties a record low set in 2010. That's a significant decline since the late 1970s and early 1980s, when about half of Americans told researchers there was a gun in their household.
The General Social Survey is conducted by NORC, an independent research organization based at the University of Chicago, with money from the National Science Foundation. Because of its long-running and comprehensive set of questions about the demographics, behaviors and attitudes of the American public, it is a highly regarded source of data about social trends. lRelated Activists push bill to openly carry handguns in Texas
Data from the 2014 survey was released last week, and an analysis of its findings on gun ownership and attitudes toward gun permits was conducted by General Social Survey staff.
The drop in the number of Americans who own a gun or live in a household with one is probably linked to a decline in the popularity of hunting, from 32 percent who said they lived in a household with at least one hunter in 1977 to less than half that number saying so now.

And no liberal bias at the Chicago 'Lib-une'.
Consider the source of this so-called 'survey'.
Obama taught part-time at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992-2004.
They never give up. Their “survey” results don’t jive with the massive amount of gun sales over the past 6 years. And still, their minions will take this seriously and start posting if all over the internet.
Yeah.
That’s the ticket.
We don’t know nuthin bout no guns.
So less than 100 million people own +300 guns? I’m doing my part.
Fewer people owning lots more guns each would explain the data.
They’re disarming, we’re arming up.
I like our odds.
I have zero interest in hunting. Only one person I hang out with hunts. We all are avid shooters.
I used to be a gun owner before the plane crash.... or was it a boat wreck. I just can’t recall.
Meanwhile, lies told to people taking polls has reached a record high.
Mistrust of our gub'mint is at an all time hight
Clearly the current gun control policies are working so we don’t need any more. In fact, since the past few years of legislation have loosened up the requirements for concealed carry, we’d probably be wise to discard all of those requirements entirely. It’s for the children, after all.
People who own firearms are not going to tell their business to some dufus stranger doing a “survey.”
I certainly wouldn’t.
Therefore, this survey is useless.
yeah, first I heard about low ownership was through the news like Odungo, I mean Obama.
What gun owner in their rightful mind would tell a phone survey that they owned guns?
ChocChip, You must be one of these “sinners”.
America’s Gun Love Boosts Firearm Stocks As Sales Surge
By Aaron Levitt | Updated September 02, 2014 AAA |
For investors, the world of “sin” stocks has long been a place to find stable returns. Product categories like alcohol, tobacco and gambling have a recession-proof nature that often makes them portfolio staples. Most investors are OK with holding positions in these vices, despite their “sin” connotations. After all, people make the choice to smoke or have a beer.
And last week they were saying to be fearful becuase so many Americans have hand guns.
THE WAY GOD INTENDED..
God Bless America. Amen.
Maybe they just don’t feel comfortable telling a liberal pollster that they own guns anymore...?
That plus all those tragic boating accidents
Just another poll devised to push a point: getting rid of the 2A.
I don’t know, but I suspect, the percentage of gun owners at the time of the Rev was probably lower than that number. I would be surprised to learn that every shopkeeper, merchant and city dweller owned a firearm while those on the frontier and or on farms probably did. Slaves sure did not either. Just because some people don’t get flu shots, does that mean no one should or they should be banned?
