Archaeologists and officials have expressed outrage about the bulldozing of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud by Islamic State militants in Iraq.
IS began demolishing the site, which was founded in the 13th Century BC, on Thursday, according to Iraqi officials.
The head of the UN's cultural agency condemned the "systematic" destruction in Iraq as a "war crime".
IS, which controls large areas of Iraq and Syria, says shrines and statues are "false idols" that have to be smashed.
"They are erasing our history," said Iraqi archaeologist Lamia al-Gailani.

It’s hard to believe drones and fighter planes couldn’t target bulldozers.
I would think that the state department is happy that some of those isis thugs have jobs. Driving a bulldozer is a job.
Sit down and figure the outcome of ISIS arriving in Saudi Arabia....the ‘black rock’ will be destroyed within days.
To be fair, I guess they have to prioritize between trying to save lives and trying to save relics, but it’s disgusting that this choice has to be made at all and that something like ISIS even exists.
That would be ironic, since Saudi imams were most likely funneling money to ISIS and its precursors because they opposed the Shi’ites in Iraq and Syria. That’s their strategy: unleashing monsters to fight their enemies, and then crying foul when those monsters turn on them.
History is replete with evidence of destroyed artifacts, churches, museums, palaces, mausoleums etc. Investigation shows that often it was those of the Muslim bent that were responsible. They destroy what they cannot comprehend. The majesty of everything that occurred after the 7th century eludes them.
According to them, history begins and ends with Mohammed. Everything prior to the 7th century is either paganism (or at best a precursor, in the case of Judaism and Christianity), everything that happened afterwards is heresy and the work of infidels. They have their Koran and neither want nor need to know anything else about the world, and to prove it, they destroy everything that's not of the Koran.
Dozer operator used to pay ok long time back.
But call one of them a rag-head...
They need to direct their outrage at Barack Obama who worked tirelessly to destroy whatever progress had been made by America's armed forces in defeating the enemy and civilizing Iraq
Is Mecca not common to all muslim sects?
Actually, a lot of achievements attributed to Arabs in mathematics, astronomy, classical scholarship, etc. was actually the work of Persians (Iranians). A good case in point is Omar Khayam. They're just called "Arabs" because when Persia adopted Islam, the people adopted Arab names.
What's happened is a vacuum was created where a heavy-handed government is needed. The maniacs who previously were dealt a heavy hand filled that vacuum.
They're like the book LORD OF THE FLIES. ISIS is emotional, social, cultural, and ethical midgets who only know how to destroy the institutions that used to keep them in line. Obama was calling them the JV when we were cyber-screaming to disintegrate them when they were marching in a column into Iraq.
Persians had a culture worth saving... It was a crime against humanity when the pedophile's cult took over that land.
Islam conquered the Persian civilization and then claimed all of its intellectual achievements as its own; and “Muslim” civilization of the last 800-1200s were the flowering of Persian thought and Iraqi civilization through cultural exchange until it converted wholly to Islam, suffocating it.
Their trajectory seems like ours in reverse. Western Christendom had its Dark Ages followed by a Renaissance and an Enlightenment. The Muslim world had an early Enlightenment followed by Dark Ages.
You know your history... thanks for sharing.
If you are far-extreme Muslim....anything that relates to a statue, or cultural icon....it has to go. to ISIS has never spoken to what they’d do when they take over Saudi Arabia.
