Lockheed Martin turned up the heat on its laser weapon technology and destroyed a truck from one mile away. The Maryland-based companys test of the ATHENA laser weapon was the highest power ever recorded of a laser weapon of its type.
The Advanced Test High Energy Assets March 3 test destroyed its target in a matter of seconds, the company said in a statement. An image of the smoking vehicle accompanied its announcement.
This test represents the next step to providing lightweight and rugged laser weapon systems for military aircraft, helicopters, ships and trucks, said Keoki Jackson, chief technology officer of Lockheed Martin.

Yes. based on....still doesn’t answer the question. Look at what it took to support the Airborne Laser.....an entire 707 variant airplane.
All I want to see is the entire complement of what it took to burn that hole, how long it took, and what a recharge/refire would take.
Yeah...remember it ....Geniuses? [or something like that] With Val Kilmer
Trust but verify someone once said.
Ah yes, Val Kilmer making some good ‘ole laser baked popcorn!
How fast does it heat up a Cup-a-Soup?
The Uzi 9 millimeter...
NBC used a Chevy.
THIS is a FORD. Wouldn’t even dent it.......................
Faster than you can say ‘Soup’s on!”........................
Dr. Hathaway: “I want 5 megwatts by mid-May”
Dr. Hathaway: “I hate popcorn”
Chris Knight: “It is possible to synthesize excited bromide in an argon matrix. Yes, it’s an excimer frozen in its excited state. It’s a chemical laser but in solid, not gaseous, form. Put simply, in deference to you, Kent, it’s like lasing a stick of dynamite. As soon as we apply a field, we couple to a state that is radiatively coupled to the ground state. I figure we can extract at least ten to the twenty-first photons per cubic centimeter which will give one kilojoule per cubic centimeter at 600 nanometers, or, one megajoule per liter.”
“That’s hotter than the surface of the sun!”
I know, but it would LOOK awesome
Not to worry, there are plenty of rednecks that would still be proud to put that truck up on blocks in their front yard!
LOL!!
Yep, Val Kilmer, and the movie was “Real Genius.”
Yup. All we see is a damaged hood. Big deal.
OH yeah, I remember that now!..........................
True, but in WWII, the idea of shooting down Kamikazes before they got anywhere near ships was found wanting.
You really know your weapons pal, I may close early
I think they're pulling our leg. Everyone knows Fords frequently blow up, with no outside help.
