Middle-class taxpayers on Obamacare learn that it’s payback time (Pelosi knew)

Roberta and Curtis Campbell typically look forward to tax time. Most years, they receive a refund – a little extra cash to pay off credit card bills. But this year the California couple got a shock: According to their tax preparer, they owe the IRS more than $6,000.

That’s the money the Campbells received from the federal government last year to make their Obamacare health coverage more affordable.

Roberta, unemployed when she signed up for the plan, got a job halfway through the year and Curtis found full-time work. The couple’s total yearly income became too high to qualify for federal subsidies. Now they have to pay all the money all back.

Their tax preparer told them they would have been better off not getting insurance at all and just paying the fine for being uninsured.

The "fine" would have been $850! Wow what a choice Obama and the Dims have made for them.

When I first read the excerpt I didn't have much sympathy for them. After reading the full article it seems the husband got a new full time job and they shifted off Obamacare part way through the year. In essence they are paying back subsidies taken while on the healthcare with money they made when they got off the plan. They are paying a price for the ACA only having a one year look to determine the subsidy.

The same thing could happen in reverse.

How does a low income couple come up with $6,000? What if they lose their jobs again?

They aren't low income. High earners with fluctuating income have to pay close attention if they take advanced subsidies. They probably weren't expecting to get back on track so fast, but that is the way it goes. It is hard to feel sorry for the couple. They made a bunch of money in the last 6 months of the year that put them over 400% of the poverty level and have to pay all the subsidies back. That is nice problem to have. They probably don't want to pay the money back because it is likely they have other bills to pay. They have at least gold plated health insurance since the wife works for the local university.

Well Bambi’s Gestapo, err IRS, just waved their hand and let 50,000 sheeple scate on paying their taxes becaused the IRS botched the filing paperwork. What law allows that? I say anyone owing the IRS give them the middle finger, let the system collapse. A good Tax Lawyer would have a field day with the IRS and their selective enforcement of the law.

As far as the Campbell’s are concerned, buuwaaahaha. Pure ignorance on their part, but fear not Dingy and Bella Pelosie will introduce legislation any day now to bail you out.
