The US TV broadcast of this year's Oscars ceremony on Sunday scored the event's lowest ratings in six years, averaging 36.6 million.
They were down by 16% on last year's ratings, according to Nielsen figures published by Variety.
First-time host Neil Patrick Harris received lukewarm reviews, while some have blamed the drop on a lack of nominations for films with mass appeal.

How bad was Boyhood?
Well it was too long for one thing. They bash Republicans throughout....but not in your face except during Obama’s campaign garbage. The actor who played the son was totally unlikable (the character)....I wanted to punch him in the face numerous times. I don’t know I guess I just didn’t see the big fuss to be honest.

...and that American Sniper would be shut out.
Remember Star Wars? I think it got an academy award for costumes or something.
Picture of the year went to Annie Hall. I remember it. It was hilarious. The showed a clip of an amazing battle scene in Star Wars (unheard of back in the day) and then they showed the “lobster in the kitchen” scene from Annie Hall.
Yeah. No contest.
I actually watched Annie Hall again last year to see if maybe as a 60 year old I would “get it”. Nope. Dumb movie was dumb.

American Sniper wouldn't have won no matter what then circumstances. Among other things — Hollywood is still unhappy with Clint Eastwood for having dissed their idol, Obama.

...some have blamed the drop on a lack of nominations for films with mass appeal.Generally speaking, films with "mass appeal" are the worst movies, because, generally speaking, people have a taste for ****.

The Oscars are full of back slapping blather. At least the Grammy’s has a few decent perfomances. Hopefully they STOP the genre “blend” they have adopted the past few years to provide Rap singers a lift becuase on their own they suck.

"Annie Hall" was on TCM last night-I turned the teevee off. I wouldn't have cable if my DH would let me get rid of it, and he never watches either, so I don't really understand. The only channel I ever watched was TCM, and I watch it less and less as they've started showing more films from the 60s and later, with cursing (including the f-bomb) and nudity, even in prime time. I don't call that "classic movies".

I am more understanding of Hollywood then most on here. I have had many heated conversations over Hollywood over the years here. I love movies and watch most of them if I can. Last year I saw EVERY movie nominated and most were really really good and I honestly didn't care which movie won. This year I saw only 2 actual nominated films. They just didn't have that interest in me this year. Just something about it. Last year I thoroughly enjoyed the Oscars.....this year I was bored from beginning to end. Last year they did not politicize it like this year. This year was a big Democratic love fest.

Another self-aggrandizement award show? How many do these government entertainers/musicians need?
Furthering the agenda of the Nobel Peace Prizer.
DEFUND propaganda/programming/amplification of their agenda.

Boyhood was SO bad, here’s the Honest Trailers version:

And the 12 years filming gimmick was not new. David Carradine filmed his daughter for 25 years in a film about Mata Hari.

I liked it The Imitation Game.
Stephan Horndog had played the role on stage. He had a lot of nuancing of the part.
What do liberals say? UNFAIR!!!!!

while some have blamed the drop on a lack of nominations for films with mass appeal. Birdman was the best they could do? And a film called Boyhood which I never heard of? The Imitation game was a history piece with Gay overtones. And this was the best Hollywood could come up with?
Why wasn't there a popular film like in the Harry Potter series? Why wasn't there a Downton Abbey like film (currently a runaway show)?
Whoops, I forgot. They don't want popularity and to make gobs of money.
In are folks with raunchy morals and those who haven't any character worth mentioning.
Thanks Hollywood, I'll wait till your films come out for free on Youtube or avoid them altogether.
