Opinion: The far right fears Jeb Bush’s success
Market Watch ^ | February 23, 2015 | Paul Brandus, White House bureau chief, West Wing Reports

One of the more memorable moments during the last presidential campaign was a GOP debate in August, 2011. Fox’s Bret Baier asked the eight candidates if they would agree to $1 in new taxes for every $10 in spending cuts. Not one person raised his (or her) hand. Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Richard Nixon—all tax hikers at one point or another during their presidencies—would have raised their hands, and might have been booed off stage. That’s how much the Republican party has changed.

Which brings us to Jeb Bush. During his eight years as governor of Florida (1999-2007), “King Jeb,” as some opponents dubbed him, cut taxes big time—$19 billion in all—and this in a state that had no income tax to begin with. But Bush, like his father, isn’t opposed to bringing in new revenue if the times call for it.

“If you could bring to me a majority of people to say that we’re going to have $10 in spending cuts for $1 of revenue enhancement — put me in, coach,” he said while testifying to a Congressional committee in 2012. Which explains why he’s never signed the no-tax pledge that has been shoved down the throats of most other Republicans by Grover Norquist, the never-elected-to-anything anti-tax bully. Sign my pledge, Norquist threatens quivering Republicans—or we’ll campaign against you. The only major candidates with the cojones to reject this extortion have been Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

“I ran for office three times. The pledge was presented to me three times. I never signed [it]. I cut taxes every year I was governor,” Bush said. “I don’t believe you outsource your principles and convictions to people.”(continued)

Except that they NEVER deliver the tax cuts after they get their “tiny” tax increase.

When Bush does secure the nomination, do you think we might actually see some conservative pols and pundits leave the party? I’m real curious.

That’s how much the Republican party has changed.

Uh, no.

How many times must Lucy pull the ball away at the last moment before Charlie Brown figures out that he's been duped?

Even if "$1 in new taxes for every $10 in spending cuts" is "the deal" that is agreed to, it never, ever would work out that way. The new taxes would be permanent, while the spending cuts would never materialize. And the Demo/Comnmies and their wholly-owned subsidiary of the lamestream media would mercilessly hammer the Republicans as "tax raisers", even though the Demo/Commies would always raise taxes even more.

So, at least most Republicans understand how the rigged game works, and would not fall for it again.

No. We are just tired of the Center getting dragged further and further left. Jeb Bush is just another example of this. He would make a great moderate Democrat, but he is crappy moderate Republican.

I did not leave the Center - it left me about 30 years ago.

” “Fear” isn’t the term I would use. More like “disgusted.””

The left patented the use of the term “fear”, like in

“homophobia”

If something disgusts you, you must “fear” it. Another big lie.

The two percent differential needs to be used to pay down the debt.”

Impossible, we could not pay down ANY DEBT if we wanted to. That sort of deflation(restoring value) is cryptonite to a Central Banker. We have a stated policy of 3% inflation (theft of value) annually, that my friend REQUIRES at least 3% higher DEBT annually, add in the Interest and it is 5%.

NO GOVERNMENT DEBT CAN EVER BE PAID DOWN.

I don’t know. But I do know which part of the base will not show up on election day.

Reagan agreed to 1 dollar in taxes for every 2 dollars in cuts. They passed the taxes immediately, but somehow the cuts never happened. So why would anyone think the 10 dollars in cuts would?

RE:”taxes are not too low”

But apparently those fools thought that spending shouldn't go lower even though they claimed the opposite.

Means none of them gave a crap about the deficit, even though they claimed they did.

nonsense like that got Obama back in office, voters could see it.

Isn't that power given to congress in budgeting?

Once again, the MSM is teaming up with the GOP to make sure we have an unelectable candidate. Everyone knows its Hillary's turn to be president, just like last time it was time to have a black president to right all the wrongs with race relations.

Everyone knows that another Bush can't possibly win, no matter what he says or does.
