If education is an escalator to lift people from poverty, young African American males are languishing at the bottom level. Only about 60 percent of them will earn high school diplomas, and roughly four in 10 drop out before graduation day. Thats compared with a 65-percent graduation rate for Latino males and 80 percent for young white men.
Meanwhile, the graduation gap between young black men and their white peers has grown even wider, jumping about 10 percent in a little over a year.
Those are just some of the sobering takeaways from the 10th biannual Schott Foundation report on the state of African American males in public education. The reports authors examined national data on high school completion rates during the 20122013 academic year. They found that although the overall graduation rate for black males has grown to 59 percentup from 51 percent in the previous 20102011 surveythey are least likely of all demographic groups to graduate from high school in 35 of 47 states and the District of Columbia.
Simply stated, while most will say black lives matter and are important, the four-year graduation results in this report indicate that most states and localities operate at best, and have created at worse, climates that often dont foster healthy living and learning environments for black males, wrote John H. Jackson, president and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education, in the report.
Pedro Nogueraa sociologist, an education analyst, and a professor at New York Universitysaid the study wasnt a surprise. National education leaders still havent addressed the systemic problems that lead to the stubborn achievement gap between black and white students....

Meritocracy. Perform or face rejection. Genetics and culture matter.
70 is the cutoff for retardation, two standard deviations from the mean, not the average for any group. IQ is not the only test of intelligence and is not correlated with success, except in a very general sense. Many extremely intelligent people fail, and many who are in the lower cohort are more successful than IQ would predict. However, success with a 70 IQ would mean being able to live with assistance and maintain a minimum wage job.
Because doing well in school and bettering yourself economically is “acting white”!
Why bother to graduate when everything is free without working?
But going to college is too elitist?
Sigh - more "blame the system" crap instead of wondering why Blacks refuse to conform to the normal standards a=that result in some form of success.
In the movie Tommy Boy there was a good quote in it, “there are book smarts and street smarts”
Before I get started here I do happen to be mostly of a certain skin color that has mixed blood and I can testify that I do not have any low intelligent folks in my family, I have a family member that served in the Navy for 20 years doing electronics and IT plus (various other jobs), served on nuke subs, holds a masters in business as well. I also have another that served in the US air force, and is currently going for his PHD in college, and as for myself I do not have my degree yet but am a certified IT tech that works in the IT field and have been for 4 years currently, and no I am not a genius nor care to be either.
To end this, I will not lie that there some very stupid folks of a certain color for I have seen it mostly in ghetto neighborhoods I try to avoid and it is embarrassing seeing that, and its the culture that’s the issue, and no one in my family should have to be blanketed with this for we work hard not sit on out a$$es and blame others, that’s not fair in my opinion.
P.S. A wise man told me that even if you are not that smart at least act like it, and do what you have to do in life to get ahead and people will mostly respect that.
CULTURE.
Next question?
An average has a bottom and a top. Individuals within a group are not all one thing.
When IQ averages are compared to averages of those who thrive in academics, the two are the same.
I think it is a mistake to think that everyone who is book smart is going to be a success in life and everyone who is not, is going to be a failure. As you said there are street smarts or common sense and there are the moral and the immoral. There are special talents that people have and develop that have nothing to do with school books.
Your wise man is wise. : )
Not without Affirmative Action.
John Ogbu, a left-wing Sociologist from Nigeria (with impeccable Democrat credentials) was hired to discern why black students from upper-middle-class families in Shaker Heights, Ohio did poorly in high school, compared with their Caucasian peers.
After interviewing many students and parents, Ogbu published his study. The reason? Values!
The Caucasian parents challenged and even demanded that their students apply themselves and do well in school.
The black parents (who were mainly married couples with high-paying jobs) did not demand excellence from their offspring. In fact, the black parents taught their children that education wasn't important and that the educational system couldn't be trusted.
Ogbu was condemned and shunned by his left-wing peers for telling the truth, and died shortly thereafter.
Yes, I also noticed that. Nor does it explain the mixing of black slaves with whites over the last few hundred years here. You would think mixing white genes with black genes would negate the lower I.Q.
I've worked alongside blacks from Africa who are highly intelligent. More so than their American black counterparts.
Because studying and graduating and it appears even work is acting White.
