Sorry, social conservatives: A Supreme Court defense of gay marriage won't be the next Roe v. Wade
The Week ^ | January 26, 2015 | Damon Linker

Posted on 01/26/2015 7:28:41 AM PST by C19fan

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

Every year in the week surrounding the Jan. 22 anniversary of Roe v. Wade, abortion foes organize marches and rallies to proclaim their opposition to the decision, which in 1973 declared the procedure a constitutional right.

The Supreme Court guaranteed that the rhetoric surrounding the anniversary would be especially heated this year when on the Friday of the previous week it granted cert in four cases that could produce a majority opinion declaring a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

Right on cue, social conservatives responded by linking any such declaration to Roe and its rancorous aftermath. No, the right asserted, a Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage will not “settle” the issue. On the contrary, it will recapitulate the powerful and polarizing reaction to the landmark abortion-rights decision, galvanizing a grassroots movement of opposition to the ruling that could eventually reverse it.

Sorry, but this is nonsense.

I think this guy is right. Divorce was a big deal but now nobody cares if one gets divorced and remarried. The same will happen with gay marriage. There was an article in the NY Times about a Lesbo couple who got married in Oklahoma. All their friends showed up anyway for the wedding even though they opposed gay marriage.

I can’t predict what will come. All I’ll know is that it is a sign that America has fully embraced evil and degeneracy, and will no longer be a country I can hold any patriotism for, nor allegiance to.

Abortion is killing. Every abortion takes a direct hit at the social fabric. Not so gay marriage. It undermines the basis of civilization, but much more slowly and in more subtle ways. So perhaps Damon Linker is right here.

Still, it should be noted that Linker is a professional fifth-columnist whose only real accomplishment was worming his way into the editorship of a conservative Catholic publication in the hope of destroying it.

They can’t even convincingly demonstrate that anyone is hurt in any way by a gay wedding.

Heck, yeah, other than sodomy being one of the "4 Sins that Cry to God for Vengeance," I wouldn't be concerned at all.

The key thing that you are disregarding is that gay marriage is intertwined intimately with attacks on religious liberty, freedom of speech (ala hate speech codes), and increasing attempts to remove gender as a valid differentiator through gender queer nonsense. Also you mistakingly tie the ability to have a marriage ceremony with marriage liscensure which is NOT the same thing. Same sex couples have never been forbidden from having marriage/commitment ceremonies. This issue is not going away and the left’s continued push with transgender and public school indoctrination as well as hateful political correctness will ultimately be the undoing. Eventually this house of cards and nonsense about “being born this way” will fall apart. It always does. People wake up when their silly fantasies are displaced by the hard reality that their good intentions did not anticipate.

When a country surrenders the moral high ground, they have lost it all.

Your point is more apt than you realize.

Divorce has been devastating to child development and the consequent emotional stability of those children.

Gay marriage will also cause harm to children raised in an ersatz "family".

But hey, who cares about that.

To the state in the modern era all marriage has ever been is simply whatever judges, pols, or the voting majority think it is at any one time. And many have been conditioned to follow the state’s definition of marriage: a civil contract with strictures and benefits that can be broken and resumed between any parties the state deems acceptable.

“No one can claim that a person dies when a gay couple weds. They can’t even convincingly demonstrate that anyone is hurt in any way by a gay wedding.”

That is an absolute falsehood.

Gay marriage is attached to Roe v Wade and abortion and both prevent life and cause death. Death from disease and from the denial of reproduction via traditional marriage.

And to say no one is hurt by gay marriage is an absolute lie. Think or the baker forced to bake cake for the gay wedding or the kids adopted by gay married couples of the traditional families that are forced to live in the same neighborhoods as gay married couples.

You think this guy is right?

In view of the damage that has occurred since the Great Society; you think this is OK? I get it. You think the government should not be involved in marriages. It’s not the proper role a government should be involved in.

Well, aren’t you happy now? Look at what the government has left us as they kicked marriage and family to the curb some 50 years ago.

Ain’t our Great Society great?

I’m curious to know from those who agree it does not hurt anyone.

Is sodomy healthy?

I want clarification that indeed anal intercourse is healthy and does not hurt anyone.

Sodomy does not lower life expectancy.

Sure there is harm. Gay marriage encourages homosexuality which harms an organism by interfering with their ability to reproduce. Sure it is a choice and they have a right to make it just as someone who thinks 2 * 2 = 10 has a right to believe that fiction. However should the government license such a fiction and pass hate speech laws punishing those who don’t agree and then require companies to hire people who are bad at math? Also there is a clear and demonstrated threat to religious speech and free speech in general from these “hate speech codes” and laws that force LGBT endorsement and approval through anti-discrimination laws.

There is no harm to me or society from a couple of guys who cohabit and mind their own business there is harm when two guys are out there demanding that school kids be taught that gender is optional and having mock gay weddings among school children and getting people fired for daring to assert that Men and Women should marry each other and that kids are best raised by a Mom and Dad. Those who think there is no harm are just naive.

Sodomy does not lower life expectancy.

Look up the mortality rates for gays in San Francisco in the 1980's.

I am not agreeing with him in his value judgments but I do agree with him in how society will react when the SCOTUS imposes gay marriage nationwide.

No matter what the supremes say—”Marriage” will remain as defined by Jesus ,That Rabbi from Nazareth called Christ by His followers -and now the world. Those who love Jesus Christ will define Marriage as JEsus did—those who reject god-and Christ will continue to render to the Reprobate—taking pleasure in them and doing as they do—until Christ returns with the Rod of Judgement There will be crying and gnashing of teeth and Cries of my God,My God -only to hear the sadness I never knew you.”

We have cowered and played defense so long that we scarcely understand reality anymore. The Supreme Court recognizing homosexual marriage isn’t parallel to Roe v. Wade. Lawrence v. Texas legalizing homosexuality is what is parallel to Roe v. Wade. That is what we should have been protesting all along. It would at least make those espousing the homosexual agenda play defense a little more. If we continue as we are currently doing, we are just waiting for them to chip away little by little at what remains of the moral fabric of society. It is long past time to play offense. We couldn’t do any worse than what we are currently doing.

“I want clarification that indeed anal intercourse is healthy and does not hurt anyone.”

Anal Intercourse can never be safe, healthy and in accordance with the design of man and woman a troubling aspect of the rapid spread of gay marriage is that it’s legality as well as the impact on our society by Lawrence v Texas is that now some heterosexual couples are now having anal sex.

Heterosexual Anal Intercourse is also destructive to health, and since it cannot produce life is destructive to life and our culture.

Well put!

I think you are being generous here:

"There is no harm to me or society from a couple of guys who cohabit and mind their own business"

But governance is, and should be, a prudential business.
