Say "P85D" to Tesla owners and fans, and you will see the drooling and twitching and heavy breathing and lustful stares--and more drooling--that Tesla's fastest, highest-performance electric car brings.
The same happens with the word "Hellcat" for fans of high-powered Hemi V-8 performance.
Now, courtesy of two owners--each convinced that their car is the fastest, baddest beast on the road--we know what happens when the two cars face off on the drag strip.
Two days ago at Palm Beach International Raceway, a Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race.
Hint: It's no contest. At all. And the quieter car wins decisively.
...
And, now, can we please stop with the "wimpy electric golf car" stuff?

Care to explain?
“I understand the 4 cylinder Ford Mustang of today absolutely blows away a 2005 Ford Mustang GT with the V8.”
You understand wrong if you are comparing stock.
The Hellcat is certified by the NHRA with a 10.80 ET with slicks and 11.20 ET with street tires. Trap speeds over 120 MPH.
That's the NHRA, not the greenfizzeeweeneecarreport, the NHRA.
No believe, CLICK.
It’s all about contact patches and weight distribution and a RWD 2WD is poor at both. 1 billion HP or not.
Some day electric will rule the school. It’s simple physics. But in the big picture sense, it’s still not there yet. But any time a Camaro owner haZ a sad, I haZ a happy ;)
Whats to explain? You think if you post something to someone that no one can respond to you?
“The p58D ran 11.6s, but Dodge confirmed 10.9s were attainable with the Hellcat in good air. “
Good points.
Dodge with their ‘prepared’ car and running drag radials got 10.85. One thing about the Tesla, it does not need ‘good air’.
norm’s a troll
You are just mad because you always seem to be unable to post proof of that or telling the world I’m wrong.
Oh well. Not my problem.
how’s your latin...... still don’t have any
Bad form to respond to trolls. Why feed me?
Don't confuse Bush with a conservative. I was and am completely opposed to tax credits of that nature. The government has no business being in the social engineering business. That sort of thing IS inimical to conservatism and to constitutional government. I think you're letting your enthusiasm for a new technology blind you to bad government practices that support it.
It was a poorly driven race, and as you could see the driver of the Dodge fouled, and then didn’t bother to race.
The ONLY way electric will rule the roost is if they can get the increased range and prices down.
The electrics are neat to play around with but take for instance where my relatives live in Minnesota vs where I live in west Texas. Heavy winters absolutely kill the range when heaters are required as well the range is killed when air conditioning is needed like here. Electric I suppose can be used in areas of California unless you travel a lot of highway use
Oh, by the way, the Challenger would have probably dusted off the little electric car if he would have had his traction control on and had a fair start. I consider this exhibition kinda like Obozo and his unemployment creative accounting.
I agree completely. It’s not happening anytime soon. The tech just isn’t there yet. Probably 50 years out or so.
I always considered ‘traction control’ cheating personally. I get it, but it’s slot car racing. Does not take talent to mash a pedal and let a comp race for you.
I wonder what the Tesla would sound like with a pair of glasspack mufflers.
“That’s the NHRA”
It was a Dodge ‘prepared’ car. NHRA only certified the time, not the state of tune...
Also, your source dropped the .05 from the time.
“Oh, by the way, the Challenger would have probably dusted off the little electric car if he would have had his traction control on and had a fair start.”
Little? 5000 pounds worth of little.
The Challenger should beat the Tesla in a quarter mile but it would be coming from behind. AWD and low end torque leaves the Challenger in the dust on the start.
Published quarter mile times according to car and driver and motortrend
Tesla 11.6
Hellcat 11.2
This is FreeRepublic, where we fight against higher taxes, not Troll to propagandize the spending of taxpayer monies on commercial enterprises.
Got it?
“What exactly do you have against Tesla and how much money have they received from the Feds? “
Every tax subsidy is a tax on the taxpayers and money in Tesla pockets. You’re not exactly known as a conservative around here. There is no such thing as a “purist” except to liberals like yourself that try to troll justifications of spending taxpayers monies on commercial enterprises.
If you don’t like conservatism or conservatives then just get the hell off FR.
